Have you looked for a photo that captures your article, to stumble around and not be able to find a photo that you could use for free. Not all of us have a budget for paying royalties to a photograph, here are five FREE sites that offer photographs.
Flickr
I use Flickr.com more than any other photo site. There are ton's of photos on every imaginable topic. This site does show photo's and images that are not free as well. So make sure that you look at what level of licensing is on the image you want to use. And while you are searching, go under advance search and at the bottom there are two buttons you will want to check. They are "Creative Commons" and "commercial use". This will keep you legal, although in almost all cases you will need to give credit and a link to the author. I have an account at flickr.com, and feel free to use my stuff as long as you give me credit for it. My name there is oh.tinkerer.
Freedigitalphotos.net
Freedigitalphotos.net has a lot of beautiful landscapes. The quantity of photos is not mind-blowing or anything even close. I haven't been using this site as much as I did before to be honest, but as stated some wonderful work is here. You should definitely check this site out.
Stock.xchng
Stock exchange can be linked to here. Stock exchange has a pretty good number of photos. The selection and diversity of the site is good. What is interesting about this site is that it also offers tutorials on how to do special effects and blogs on the site. This is pretty much a community of artists working together and helping others.
Wikimedia Commons
This is a wiki style site that offers free photos and images. There is a more professional feel to some of the photos on this site. The photos can be very specialized as well. If you look into the biology section and see all the great underwater photos taken - you will realize that some of these types of photos are very hard to find other places. This is one site that I highly recommend taking some time and wandering around. Wikimedia Commons can be linked to right here.
Open Photo
Open Photo started about in 2008 and has built a great base of stock photos. These are good quality and the site is well organized. The categories that they use are pretty interesting too. You can keep clicking to get more specific types of photos. Like clicking on "Professions" brings you to 37 subcategories. When you click on one of these subs then you get to all the photos in that subcategory and have a slew of photos there. Again an interesting selection of photos .
Free photos are great
When writing and a number of other things free images and photos can be great. Make sure that if you stumble onto one that you like that you keep track of it. I have lost a couple of small but excellent sites because I didn't mark them down that minute. As stated earlier, most artists with free photos just want credit for their work and generally a link to the work that you are using. Good luck and have fun with those photos.

I have used freedigitalphotos for ages and found them really great but have recently looked at Wikimedia Commons and another site, Mark, the moderator suggests is Morguefile.com too. This is a great article because finding good sites with free access to images is a real minefield of risk. Can you also get free images from Photobucket too Chris?

If they are free, for commercial use then you have the copyrights. Only means that you have the right to use them and you are using them correctly.

One reason I wrote this hub, I should have called it 6 sites and put Morguefile.com on it.
