Ambulance.........A Life Poem

Today I have noticed more Ambulances than normal and was inspired to write this poem. I often wonder when I hear the sirens and see the flashing lights whom the Ambulance is rushing to or indeed what has befallen the passenger.

Ambulance..........A Life Poem

Accident

Ambulance
Ambulance I hear your siren loud
Rushing through the automobile crowd
Blue lights flashing brilliant and bright
Your speeding vehicle an ominous sight.

I touch my cross and silently pray
For the person you carry will be saved this day
That you'll reach the hospital in plenty of time
That today Gods mercy on them will shine.

I imagine your passenger lying on a stretcher bed
Hopefully not regretting the last words that they said
A heart attack victim or was it a stroke?
Their family rallying round in an effort to cope.

Ambulance are you accelerating to a road victim scene?
Perhaps an impatient child not waiting for 'the green'?
Some shocked passer-by using their mobile phone
The childs distraught brother quickly running home.

Parent unbelieving , wanting to contradict each word
'My child in a serious accident? How absurd'
Details graphic and bloody, slow and painfully sinking in
An Ambulance already at the scene, things must be very grim.

Ambulance driver,medic,trained staff
In between call-outs do you pull over and laugh?
Laugh and talk about last nights T.V.?
Relieving pent-up stress, renewing your energy.

Courageous men and women so highly trained
At the end of a tough shift are you mentally and physically drained?
Immediate crowd relief when from the ambulance you appear
Professionally taking charge and calming morbid fears.

You add to your knowledge each and every day
Your wage slip not reflecting your true worth in monthly pay
Your vocation we know you carry out with dedicated pride
Our panic stricken moments calmly taken in your stride.
