A short Haiku poem which describes in a few words the ultimate penalty meted out by our criminal justice system
Awaiting Death
We are not only a nation of men. America and its citizens are a nation of laws. This is what binds our society together. Were it not for the laws and the government's ability to carry them out, each person (lacking this fear of punishment) would swallow up his neighbor. It is, therefore, wise for us to pray daily for the welfare of our nation and its ability to continue to mete out justice. Without these inalienable rights and protections and the ability to uphold them, it would not take long before civilization would regress to a state of anarchy. Let us think back to a time not long ago, the times of the wild, wild west. In a place and time where there was no acknowledged, or empowered authority to maintain law and order, the locale quickly deteriorated into an environment of banditry, murder and total chaos. Without weighing the morality and effectiveness of the death penalty, there is sufficient statistical proof that it does deter crime.
Looking at the fearful existence of this ultimate of punishments, makes one wonder what type of emotional mindset takes over the person who is about to take this, his "last seat."
been sentenced to death
appeals process has expired
