Don't look up...

This is the story on how my simple movie night evolved into a scenario that still sends a chill down my spine.

The Tale

On the screen reflected the harsh style, but brilliant writing of the film Boondock Saints, as the rest of the house settled in blackness. I leaned upon my boyfriend, as my short attention span led my eyes around the dark room. My focus found itself attached to one particular spot upon the paneled ceiling.

It was out of focus.

Thanks to the fact that I'm very lightly near-sighted, this isn't unusual. However, panels that were further back were in complete focus. How very peculiar.

My boyfriend noticed my staring, and questioned me. I lightly informed him, causing him to find the same panel. He somewhat remained mute, as I stood on the couch and poked the ceiling (for the panel was over my head), and sat down. The hairs on my arms stood at attention, as I continued to stare at the ceiling. The detail seemed far more easy to focus on, now. I didn't say a word, until my boyfriend decided to point out the change of focus to me.

Keeping oddly calm, my eyes shifted to the corner of the room. I couldn't see a single detail - so I decided to point it out to my boyfriend yet again. This time, I honestly wasn't sure if it was my vision, the natural shadows of the room, or something was seriously wrong.

Before long, he directed my attention to a different corner, which he noticed had lost its detail - causing both of us to look at the previous corner. Its clarity had improved ten-fold.

My heart beat uneasily as my eyes remained transfixed upon the new corner, as my boyfriend's eyes slid back to the movie. Suddenly something moved, causing the new corner to regain its clarity - and the very next panel to go out of focus. I nudged my boyfriend and reported what I had seen.

Within the next room, something white lit up for about a single second, before going out and fading back into the murky blackness. Thanks to the fact we were both staring in that general direction, we both saw it. The ceiling was now perfectly clear, everywhere.

The end-credits rolled across the screen, as we turned on lights and tried to figure out what the white light could have been.

We were sitting in my house's built-on patio-room, meaning the light came from the attached living room. After poking around the area, we finally found a Nightmare Before Christmas lamp upon my mother's desk, within the living room. I have personally never seen it on - but it was in exactly the right place to cause the random white light. It was too brief and bright to be a reflection off of it...plus we couldn't even figure out how to turn it on.

The air in the house was mildly cool, but the air that surround the light was simply frigid.

For awhile, we both stood there - confused and slightly disturbed. I have grown up with scenarios like this my entire life...but it's a whole new feeling when someone else is there right by your side.

It makes it feel real.
Too real.

Oh hi. I'm a film major in college that likes to write far too much for my own good. I tend to like Scifi, psychological twists, and just weird Twilight Zone-esk things.
