Echoes Of An Oversoul--Part 23
I GRADUATED FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL, to High school. The school I was now attending is Coral Springs High, located approximately a mile away from where we lived. Momma had her hands full; too much on her plate–so she handed Angelo and Shellande over to Daddy. We were still living in Riverside, but in a different apartment located on forty-fourth Court. Right across the street from our two-bedroom apartment was a small recreational park.
Momma now had a boyfriend whom Jimmy and I didn’t take much of a liking to. He would try to make us address him as dad, be we never gave in and continued to address him by his name. He wasn’t physically abusive, but he loved employing sarcastic humor in his conversation, smirked a lot and appeared very sly. Jimmy and I could never seem to trust him for a number of reasons. One of those is, he was always seeking to dig through our life’s secrets, while he kept all of his buried deep. Every once in a while, when I’d take a good look at him, a sore feeling of anger welled up in me. My bitter feeling wasn’t specifically because of him, but because of Daddy. I feel if Daddy had remained faithful to Momma, she wouldn’t have had to fall in love with sly-looking guys. Had Momma’s boyfriend been abusive, and not help pay the bills, I would have scared ‘em away by threats with the quickness.
Not long after we moved to forty-fourth Court, I befriended a kid named Jack who lived about two blocks away. Jack was as fond of video games as I was, and I recall spending a great amount of time at his house playing video games. It got to a point where Jack found me to be a very fascinating person. He started following me just about everywhere I’d go–to church, arcades, clubs, etc..
Jack could never seem to hear enough of my speech about females. “Tell me some more about the girls, John,” he would anticipatingly request. And I was always more than willing to give ‘em a piece of my mind. In fact, one day, we sat down in the backyard of Momma’s apartment–and I spilled my mind out to him:
“Dig this, Jack. The way to a girl’s heart is through love, cooperation, understanding, respect and appreciation. When you’re in the presence of the girls, be sure to have on clean attire, and your hygiene is up to par. Brush your teeth, gargle or have a breath mint before getting up close and personal. The fragrance you have on should be light, not too much or too strong–’cause the smell can be overbearing and affect the girl’s mood, changing it from good to bad. Be a gentleman, don’t be too quick to talk, listen and store notes in your memory bank. Because a lot of guys fail to listen, their girls go out seeking someone who will listen. The world doesn’t spin around you–so avoid being self-centered, always give a girl some room in the spotlight so she could feel equally special.
“Be mindful of the language being displayed. I’m not just talking about verbal, I’m also talking about body and content. Verbally, avoid unnecessary use of profanity and sly comments. Choose your words wisely, ’cause only fools with limited vocabulary resort to innuendos. Speak clearly and avoid stuttering. If you’re trying to have a relationship, let the girl know. And if you just want a no strings-attached, let her know that, too. Honesty is the best policy.
“You’ve probably heard the saying, ‘actions speak louder than words’. Well, that’s truth, because in the art of language, about sixty-five percent is body, twenty-five percent is verbal and ten percent is content. So having said that, be sure to pay close attention to your body-language, as well as hers. You can learn a lot just from body language alone.
“All girls wanna feel loved, special, and be happy. One very effective way to help them achieve that is by surprising them with an unexpected gift at an unexpected time. Don’t wait for a special occasion like a holiday or birthday and whatnot. Girls like spontaneity. You don’t have to be rich and feel like you have to spend a fortune to make her happy. You’d be surprised how simple things like flowers is all it takes to put a big grin on a girl’s face. And speaking of flowers, the color significance for roses goes like this: red for passion, white for purity and pink for romance. So keep this in mind for whenever you decide to give a girl flowers.
“Finally, Jack, there’s a method called poetry-feeding. This is my favorite, because I’m a poet. The fastest and steadiest moving thing known to humanity is the mind. So if you’re going to interrupt this onrushing flow of thoughts and feelings, make sure it’s well worth it. As a master-poet, which I consider myself to be, I came to the realization that one good way to get a girl to fall in love with you is by feeding her poetry. This method if effective, as long as it’s good quality poetry with a message of love, appreciation and admiration. Trust me when I say this, a soft word is like a magnet that attracts, and a harsh word is like an onrush of pressure that repels.”
“Thank you, John. You’re the best,” Jack said smiling.
“Ain’t no biggie, you dig. Any time bro’…any time,” I drawled, and a smile of great satisfaction etched its way across my face.
