Mutual suspicion, selfishness, ego and deception stand in our way and put paid to all our achievements in science and technology. We need to make real progress in the way we embrace humanity as one for a meaningful journey ahead.

Make a new beginning

It is not tough to achieve in personal lives. Single-minded focus on our goals should drive us with a bit of luck, of course. Our political leaders too have to find their motivation. The best is to serve the people to find their way into the hearts of the common folks. However, plethora of ills assails us from every angle. None is excluded - individual, society, countries, and as we are increasingly interconnected, the whole planet itself. It is time not only to cure the disease but also to prevent it from recurring.

Our realities

If we reflect on our present state of affairs, the ills that visit us are due to our ill-conceived goals and chosen ways to realize them. We are motivated by greed at every level and add to it the potent mixture of ego and one-upmanship! We are not only selfish but deny others what is their due. We also take an easier route without a thought for the well being of future generations. We are losing the moral path and plain self-centered in our ways.

We are progressing in science and technology. Instant communication through multimedia has become a reality. The world has become our oyster with the nimble-footed moving across continents in a jiffy. What is news in an isolated area soon resonates across humanity. That should make us feel as one and for the good to realize that they are in the majority; distance and other attributes hardly count. The evil among us, ever a fact of life, can be isolated and dealt with.

Even though the common goals are commendable, frailties of human behavior prevent us from achieving our goals. We are suspicious of others intent despite agreements signed. Countries try to weaken others, even hitting them below the belt. What the leaders proclaim hardly matters; we have become cynical through deceptions as gleaned from history. There are a lot between the cup that is filled with hope and good intentions and the thirsty, parched lip!

The way out

It is clear that science and technology are only tools and the basic change has to emanate from our minds. Our thoughts and actions have to be above board, even noble. Trust building is the basic step. When people believe in each other and those with suspect intentions isolated, we should be on our way.

We need to bring diplomacy under the radar. It is no more about scoring cheap points. When we don’t trust others as a matter of course, others too repay with the same coin! It becomes a vicious circle. Despite United Nations, IMF, World Bank and many other world bodies, we hardly integrate and unify for sustained common, basic actions. We hardly make an effort to rein in the arms merchants, who are the root of evil; their wares landing in “wrong” hands.

Pursue common agenda

Is it so difficult to find common agenda and follow it through trust and mutual interests? When suspicion, ego, selfish pursuits take over, these become untenable. When we pursue wealth as an end in itself, we pay a heavy price. We need to be motivated by goals that benefit humanity, also other species taken as a whole, through sustainable methods. There should be areas that are taboo, not used by stealth to steal a march over others and even gloat over them later as achievements! Deception, suspicion, selfishness are our enemies and have created a cynical world. We have tools now to identify clearly our common goals and expose those working at cross purposes.

Unless we are prepared to take the bull by the horns, we will forever be mired in controversies and accuse each other of actions that we are all guilty of! A common journey of hope and trust beckons us – let us not miss another day. None can find sustained success by isolating themselves in an island of prosperity. Soon the cover of negativity will be blown. The world has waited long enough for the dawn of a new beginning of hope and inclusiveness.

These thoughts are inborn in everyone. Every child is innocence personified. But circumstances, mostly man made, make few take the wrong paths. Humanity, nay the whole planet, is made to pay the price. Heaven on earth, so thoughtfully presented to us, is turned into hell and we all suffer. Thanks dear Judy, for resonating with my thoughts - siva

Thanks, Siva: A special, star-worthy page. It was very encouraging when the Russian and U.S. scientists were working together on the Space Program. I don't know if this is still happening.

This is another beautiful peac of work from you dear Siva Sir! I fully agree with your views! There are many sincere and genuine scientists who are being side tracked and subjected to lot of mental tortures by the authorities for their vested interests and may be also to satiate their over pampered egos! Thanks!
