After seeing Werner Herzog's film...I am inspired to write this for it is a pictorial account of our forefathers over 30,000 years ago and more. Their abilities to draw and record for eternity those days. And to those who think the world began 2000 years ago ...phooey to you and your absurd doctrines.

Finding the Chauvet Cave

In Southern France sometime ago in the Ardeche
Explorers they did find a cave
And following deep inside
On limestone walls were found
Prehistoric art in many forms

This was a find of immense size
For pristine works like these
Dating back 30,000 years and more
Twice as old as any since
Give us a viewing quite sublime
Of human culture as it was drawn
By Upper Paleolithic men

Inside the Cave

A group of archealogists then they did go
Inside the cave one day to explore
And bring back the glories that were there
But only for a certain time were they allowed to stay

So deep inside they went along the narrow metal floor
That had been built so shoes would not encroach
On one of history's most valuable finds
From thirty thousand years ago

At first the beauty of the stacalites and stagalites
In multitudes of shapes and forms

From limestone cliffs all around above and below
They reared their mighty spokes into the air
Or hung down almost to the floor

And so impressed themselves upon the scientists eyes

Experiencing the Cave

Not long were they allowed to stay
And using headlamps not too bright
In fear of damaging treasures from the past
They carefully pictures took for us
And future generations to see

They stood there these men of good repute
And in the quietness of the cave so deep below the ground
They listened to their heart beat sound

As filled they their eyes
With glories of the past long gone by

Horses in movement so sublime

On these crenellated walls were drawn
Amazing drawings of horses their movement almost seen
and happening

Beautiful to behold their heads held in proud stance
Many of them as in a running herd
Moving along the inner cave walls

Other animals too

Other animals too there were to view
Bison with eight legs, their heads held high
Rhinoceros with peaked snouts, big bellies too
Running they were along the walls
As if in three dimensional quality they seemed to move
To those of us who watched in sheer delight

Drawing of Lions and more

The mighty Lion he too made into lifelike form
His fierce head alert hunting bison was he
And these drawings from the past by artists
In excellence were they executed
for man to find and see
Centuries down in time
Us who this piece read

And others yet to see
For surely we came from even longer than
30,000 years ago

Time immemorial yet still recorded somewhere
Perhaps in your consciousness as in mine
Definitely in mine

Beautifully expressed, cnw. They wanted posterity to know through their exquisite drawings. They have done their part, built on foundations made much earlier. Let us continue their good work, learning from history. They have showed the way for us to lead a good path, learning from their mistakes. Are we upto carrying on the good work further or just end up consumed in hate and mutual suspicion? Rambling thoughts, these may be! - siva
