Love Trumps Hate: Thus Far

Only a change in our approach to our lives can take us forward on an assured journey of hope and betterment. We need to get out of the rut, vicious cycle of mutual suspicion whereby our innate love is suppressed to give hate a monopoly to define our general outlook.

Never let the guard down

Life is an endless tussle between the good and the evil – love and hate. Negative and bad news often upstage the good. Natural disasters become man-made when we take nature for granted. Being ever aware of nature and taking precautions could save our lives and money to a great extent. But mostly, right from the beginning of humanity, we are our own worst enemies; unable to coexist. It reflects on an unwillingness to find common ground than a healthy difference of opinion. Despite knowing the consequences, with modern weapons of mass destruction thrown in for good measure, we tempt fate. We refuse to cooperate and coexist in this world, yet hoping for a blast in heaven later!

We can very well seek His guidance through prayers to realize our potential, but why not stand on our own feet for day to day survival? After all, are we not provided with everything, and even more, to have meaningful, yet challenging lives? However, we act like grown-up children unable to sort out our differences, trivial as they prove in the end. Few even join hands with devils around us even when made aware of dangers for taking such a path. We saw the ignominious end of a bigot, Osama, who was plotting mass killings even as he was hiding and afraid of his own end. He seemed to be doing pretty well till the final moments, with family life and wives not an issue, even as he was luring others to find heaven through killing innocents! And many were just juveniles, led into a life of hate to a point of no return.

Time for Reason

We are told of the beauty of love that most receive in abundant measure when young even from strangers. But slowly we become aware of the "real" world that is laced with hate, jealousy, one-upmanship, deceit and hypocrisy. We want to score cheap points at work place and even at home! To have healthy competition may be wired within us but we descend to skullduggery to spite our own. When the trust is lost, we are in a life of getting even at every turn and spread misery all around.

We seem to lose our way after imbibing lovely fairy tales at young age. Life as it unfolds is tough to reconcile in the beginning but some revel soon after getting worldly-wise, to survive. In that process, the basic love factor gets diluted and we tend to see others as competitors in a zero-sum game. Slowly, it descends to hate and the trust is soon lost. It happens between countries and even within families. Soon it is each for his own and leads to misery all around.

Now that competition is becoming fiercer by the day for finite resources, countries are at loggerheads. Few are used as pawns in the game. Human lives have become cheap. We accumulate sins and bad karma by the day. We burden mother earth with our sins and hatred towards each other, though she forgives us every moment and we are still blessed with weather as usual! Despite multiplying our numbers to seven billion, we have managed to reduce food scarcity but we still waste our resources without a thought for tomorrow.

Do we ponder over our deeds and reconcile, or let hate overwhelm us, trumping love? Why is it so difficult to find peace for our common good? Like in some filmy themes, only an impending apocalypse might unite us in the end! It is our bane to play with fire to satiate our base instincts. We will fail then miserably to rise above mediocrity.

Change approach to make the difference

The moment we treat all creations as derived from the same source, with the same feelings, common destiny and act on such a premise, the world will look and turn for the better. Hate is an easy emotion but to love another is not that spontaneous. We find many reasons to differentiate, but are we not seeing for ourselves, we are same when tragedies strike and the outpouring of emotions for the victims are similar everywhere?

Our lives will acquire so much more meaning if we take a common stand based on empathy and understanding. But we are overwhelmed with fear and others' intentions to give love a chance to trump hate on a daily level. And we prefer to live as business as usual without realizing our potential. It is time indeed to make a change for the better and smell the sweet air of our common journey and destiny. We need to rise above petty feelings that pull us apart and down. Life is after all a shared journey with ups and downs; everyone can find a niche to contribute to find purposeful lives. No need at all to tear each other to forceful doom. Love is divine and hatred is the pits!

Indeed two vital issues are asked here to resolve. Where are those leaders to answer and resolve?

Thanks for your nice, wise intentions.

Thank you Karim, our leaders have to come from within us. Bangladesh has one in you, I can easily see from your passion to take on vital issues, analyse and bring them to the open. We should attack the hatemongers at every level than give them free play. Sheik Mujibur Rahman rose out of necessity of the times, and after that, there have been those who just took the easy path. We know what we want, but we succumb to greed and selfishness. Why need an impending apocalypse to unite us? siva

Shiva,
You are much wiser for your age. Your piece is full of wisdom that cannot be disputed.
Could you tell me where you got this wisdom?

Thank you, GVR - what touching words to come from a person who has seen it all! I am not young anymore, and in a hurry to share my "wisdom" ! I have seen life in all its hues to know tentative is the "peace" that survives for now, and built upon a thin edifice! Hate is just waiting to show its ugly face beneath the veneer of calm. One evil is enough to rally the worst feelings in us to go at each other's throats. Thanks again, for your kind words to spur me on - siva

Thanks dear Buzz. Such words make me humble and I bow my head. These are my life experiences that I want to share and leave them to posterity. Though I admire the youth, I also worry that they can be easily influenced by the evil. We easily succumb to them and pay a heavy price. Be on guard, as evil always lurks beneath and can overwhelm us in a jiffy! Namaste - siva

Thanks for such lofty words, Steve. I am just an observer of our state of affairs. I feel defeated that I cannot do more than pen few lines to unite us for an endless journey of love which would be so fulfilling than the present state of pulling each other down based on every permutation and combination possible - siva

Nice article. Do you think man is held accountable for love or the lack of love? Do we reap what we sow?

Thanks Ms. Ann, for your probing comments. We are blessed with conscience, inner voice, to spread love even where there is hate. In fact, where hate reigns, love has a greater role to play! I believe, we reap what we sow. I have seen subtle changes in my own life when a loving lifestyle and compassion attract even strangers, and what more, change their attitudes. Even in Wikinut, I have seen my artlcles have elicited kind words, thoughts from others who see me only through my words. I have lived in few countries and I am color, race and religion blind. I see only humanity around, just human race with same feelings and other species entitled to their own space. Once we take such an approach, nothing can faze us, and we experience bliss - that is what I have articulated in my next article waiting for its turn to be published - siva

You must be a Bible scholar Siva because all of your truths and analogies are rooted in God's word. I have lived a life of forgiving because the Bible tells us that vengeance (is that spelled right?) anyway getting revenge belongs to God and God alone. All my life people have used and abused me because of my naive trust in the good of mankind, yet, I forgave them and God brought them to their knees for their cruel behavior. Now those same people have turned to God because I let Him handle the revenge! Their is nothing more freeing then to pray for those who mistreat you and let God handle the rest.

Thanks Judy, for such uplifting words. I look up to my conscience, inner voice, to guide me; treat others better than I would like to be treated. I am afraid of material possessions beyond the basics and just enough to protect my family in times of their need. After all, there are many in need of basics much more than we ever are. I have always forgiven even the meanest as they are only accountable for their actions in the end and comeuppance will come in own way - siva
