Monday Office Ants.........A Life/Work Poem
Monday Office
The clock hands move to twelve
Bringing relief from Zombie toil
Restless clock-watchers come alive with coat in hand
Like ants from the mown ant hill
They scurry forth in mass desertion
Faceless offices left behind , empty, void of motion
Save blinking computer screens, password safe.
Suit smart they depart into blinding sunlight
Breathe the outside, noisy air
Unrecycled, diesel fresh
Sandwiches to swiftly purchase and consume
Envious window shopping
Bank managers to persuade, work tired partners to greet
Gossip to relate with colour added
The heady passions of the weekend a fading memory
Alcohol and night clubs enjoyed in drunken splendour
Now once more locked away in Pandoras box.
Hollow, miserable, vigour-less creature
Your week days are planned, set in cold stone
Your mind focuses not on the coming week
Head bowed you deny the knowing ,
Cruel monotonous days lie ahead, you walk faster
As if to null the pain and dismiss biting apathy
Too early to plan for the next weekend
Too late to review the last, pleasured freedom again denied.
Queuing now with short patience in clone grey- black,
Dictated uniform, image set, personality removed, worker ant
Clock watching once again, this time, moves with rate of speed
Minutes to return to desk, to volunteered imprisonment
Bills to pay, money to earn in loathsome, honest, brain soft work
The cost too high? For some indeed
They dream of escape for better purpose
To leap from their Monday morning beds with elation, furore
Labour for cash, paper for goods, fair exchange
Why then remorse for all Mondays?
Monday the week day with Judas name
Hated, loathed , despised beginning
Revolving Monday, spent with the slow enemy, time.
