I've been contemplating silence lately...so this page uses a combination of prose, music and poetry to explore the spiritual relevance of silence and reflection for every avenue and area of life. Click on links for meditative music videos and journeys through Japanese gardens.

Reflections on Silence and Breath
I've become enamored with the emptiness of pauses between notes, between words, between breaths...because they remind me of the true nature of mind and consciousness.
Standing at the center of life's compass--the pause between the in-breath and the out-breath where all is stillness--we are empowered to imbibe peace whichever way the pendulum happens to swing.
Like the cinema screen that remains empty (by nature) no matter how many various scenes are projected upon it, emptiness reminds us that the image we see in the mirror does not fundamentally exist except through our perception...it is a projected image that disappears when we cease looking at it.
Sonnet Ode to the Music Rest
Creative, finely cadenced artistry,
weaves counterpoint with melodies refined,
producing auditory poetry
that elevates the height of human mind.
Elation is the voice of inspiration—
the quest of all who wish to be a guest
in citadels of lofty concentration
where finest silence find’s its peacefulness.
Cacophonies’ contempt becomes exempt
from momentary stillness of the rest
between the fluid tones whose flow preempts
the probe of mystic inward-centeredness.
Accentuating silence using sound,
ironically, makes music more profound.
Free Verse Ode to the Music Rest (I)
In musical composition,
pauses
prove as key to phrasing
as strings of notes.
Intermittent hush
assists melody's natural flow.
Stillness prompts and probes
reflections
that conjure the commentaries
of notes.
Free Verse Ode to the Music Rest (II)
An active life
devoid of contemplation
becomes a chaotic orchestra--
a cacophony for the ear.
A life
punctuated
by peaceful insight
becomes a magnum opus
accentuating the genius of stillness
through harmonic refrain.
When a Master speaks,
hearts listen.
senryu ode to the music rest
I)
As water weaves its way
through solid rock,
our spirit finds its route
through
silent talk.
II)
pauses between breaths
are like unstressed music rests
holistic silence
Conclusion: Nothing is Solid (Philosophical Sonnet)
As if a lens has opened my third eye,
an iridescent sphere has flourished forth,
as soft blue pear illumines inner sky,
augmenting meditation's inner worth.
A dance of light beams swirl within creation;
and nothing is as solid as it seems.
These hurling rays prove we are all relations
with kinship shared in spiritual genes.
See, everything depends upon a shift
in attitude, with mind empty of thought.
Our customary boat must set adrift,
releasing chains of concepts we've been taught.
New formula of Relativity
denotes the truth of our divinity.

Silence is golden - one of the first sentenses I remember from my childhood days. Another - God is love. English is not my mother tongue and these two often play back in my thoughts. You have eloquently spoken about silence and the meaning of pauses between our breaths. These thoughts should forever be remembered when I see the gadgets taking over the lives of the young, who listen to music (sometimes just noise to others) and having less attention span than that of the proverbial gnat! One needs to contemplate about life more often now as we are left to own devises and come to rue our choices too late. Thanks Rama-ji for your words of wisdom - siva

Though emptiness speaks infinitely large volumes, I was not able to post an empty comment, but I feel I said many things by adding the 'dotty sphere', I don't really have words to say but 'be myself in the silence' you created!
