Bad News for Soap Opera Fans

In the last week, daytime fans have gotten news that ABC is canceling two long-time daytime serials, All My Children and One Life to Live. The social networks, Facebook and Twitter have been getting a lot of posts asking fans and anyone to protest and even go to the point of boycotting ABC for the cancellation of these two beloved shows. As a fan of soap operas, I'll admit that I will miss watching these two shows when they go off the air, but how much protesting and boycotting ABC is actually going to work.

It seems that daytime serials that have been know as soap operas for years is a dying genre. It seems it all comes down to ratings and there just doesn't seem to be enough people watching these iconic shows. Now days there is Soap Net that airs daytime serials at night after the local channels have aired their daily episode. Soap Net even runs a marathon on the weekend and will show the entire week for soap fans who miss an episode. There is also the DVR for soap fans who record their soaps. These two reasons, Soap Net and recording the soaps because viewers aren't home to view them at the time they're on, doesn't allow for everyone to be counted when rating just who is actually watching.

I believe that if ABC decides to cancel these beloved shows, no amount of protesting or boycotting is going to save the soap operas. Maybe it's time for soap opera fans to admit that maybe they are a dying genre. After all, how many stories can one show actually tell after years of being on the air?

I guess the networks don't poll State Prison inmates. I have two cousins who are correctional officers with the New York State Department of Corrections and they tell me that most inmates watch the soaps faithfully on their cell TVs. According to my cousins the inmates take those daytime soaps very seriously.

interesting news -- i use to watch the soaps back 20 years ago--- and they are very addicting especially to newborn mothers and inmates or housewives -- even professionals with nothing to do for an hour to kill time -- and i think they out rate jerry springer too-- lol but see the problem here i thinkk many dont know but abc is not a public broadcasting station -- it belongs with cable television.. probably cause it's oprahs channel -- idk -- but - i have free television -- we refuse to pay for cable -- when the digital is so good and abc never turned digital-- so my guess is that abc wanted money off these soaps to stay on their channel and you can probably take it from there --so sorry for those that love the shows --thhat's how i feel about 2 and a half men--- i use to think it was all about charlie-- but found-- it was the team as a whole that made charlie so lovable and dashing and exciting-- we all must remember in this world we are all replacable..nice write..♥ ITS DEB

I guess it's nice to know that soap fans are dedicated, but how can they not be...they watch these shows 5 days a week and get invested in these characters it would be hard not to...I think we need to realize that nothing lasts forever...that eventually they will end. Thanks Denise, Jerry and Deb for your comments.

I'm not sure if we get this in the UK. But I am sorry for the fans that it has been cancelled, doesn't seem fair.

I don't know these shows, but what a good idea to highlight your disappointment. Good share.

I love how everyone says that the soap opera genre is dying....funny how it is going strong in other countires. I watch Eastenders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street from Britain, Home & Away and Neighbours from Australia and Shortland Street from New Zealand. And even in the U.S, their obviously is a market..the telenovella is going strong on the Spanish-speaking channels.

Well, I think you are making a huge mistake! I grew up watching All my children and One life to live.. I love these shows so much, I don't know what I will do with out them; the shows are practically my life! so please, (I beg of ABC to) keep them on the air! My daughter has grown up with these shows as well, she's 15 years old and loves them just as much as I do! We also DVR the shows, because we don't want to miss a single episode! Therefore finding out that shows DVR'd don't count for ratings really upset me. We've watched each character grow up for years, and I will surely miss them all! I honestly love everyone on one life to live as well as All my children!
