Bad News for Soap Opera Fans
In the last week, daytime fans have gotten news that ABC is canceling two long-time daytime serials, All My Children and One Life to Live. The social networks, Facebook and Twitter have been getting a lot of posts asking fans and anyone to protest and even go to the point of boycotting ABC for the cancellation of these two beloved shows. As a fan of soap operas, I'll admit that I will miss watching these two shows when they go off the air, but how much protesting and boycotting ABC is actually going to work.
It seems that daytime serials that have been know as soap operas for years is a dying genre. It seems it all comes down to ratings and there just doesn't seem to be enough people watching these iconic shows. Now days there is Soap Net that airs daytime serials at night after the local channels have aired their daily episode. Soap Net even runs a marathon on the weekend and will show the entire week for soap fans who miss an episode. There is also the DVR for soap fans who record their soaps. These two reasons, Soap Net and recording the soaps because viewers aren't home to view them at the time they're on, doesn't allow for everyone to be counted when rating just who is actually watching.
I believe that if ABC decides to cancel these beloved shows, no amount of protesting or boycotting is going to save the soap operas. Maybe it's time for soap opera fans to admit that maybe they are a dying genre. After all, how many stories can one show actually tell after years of being on the air?
