'The Ragpicker' is a poem about a young boy who makes a living out of rag picking.Though his life is pitiable,he is resilient and confident that one day he will be a part of the dignified society.

The Ragpicker

A family,I hadn't one.
But those who toiled in the sun,
And shared their tale like everyone,
Were my family,I wasn't none.

I am the king of all I see,
In the dustbin,that was me.
Anything useful had to be,
In my sack,a home for flea.

Children to school,walking by,
Had to fight that silent cry.
Heard them say,a lucky guy,
Endured their envy with a sigh.

Marina,I liked that name,
The beach was fit for any game.
The stalls were busy, the crowds came.
My sack was full,my feet felt lame.

Sitting under a shady tree,
Counting the day's earned rupee.
Not so happy,only three,
Enough for a meal, the water was free.

I met my love, that cute dame,
We fell in love, our work was same.
Her parents lived only in name,
Our fate she said was to blame.

I clasped her hand,my anger aflame,
Our destiny is ours,to run is shame.
We will fight the fate and tame,
Tomorrow will tell of our fame.

One day I will have a family,
A ration card and an identity.
My son will live in prosperity,
And the dustbin,just a curiosity.

Hope springs eternal. He has only one way to go, driven by his dreams, ambition and never-say-die-spirit - up. Great feelings here, Augustine - siva
