The Sincere Student

A story in rhymed poetic verses with a twist of humor and a moral.

The Setting...

There lived a sharp teacher who prided himself
on schooling bright boys in their final year (twelfth)
to get highest marks so they’d end up in college—
no matter their depth of digestible knowledge.

At semester’s inception he’d hand them all lists
of lessons they’d learn. “Now you all study this
and master each teaching with diligent stride;
a disciplined effort must surely abide.”

The New Boy

One year, a new student had joined his class late.
The teacher was anxious on how he would rate
if the boy fell behind—to date he’d not faced
a hindrance to following fast-moving pace.

He admonished the boy that he must study harder
in order to level with those who’d gone farther.
The young one, named peter, just nodded his head.
He felt very humble and vowed he would tread
every step of the path with persistence and patience
with hope to bring comfort to all his relations,
who feared he might fail due to his imperfections
and curiously inwardly-drawn predilections.

The Proud Teacher's Demands

At the end of semester, before the exams,
the teacher inquired, “Are you lions or lambs?”
He stared at each student as if to assess
if they would live up to the best they professed.

He zoomed in on Peter and voiced his concern,
“I trust you have mastered each lesson we’ve learned?”
but bowing his head, with hushed voice he said, “No.
I’ve managed the first, with the second in tow;
it took me forever—perhaps I’m too slow—
yet I’ve mastered the first one, that much I do know.”

The Angry Teacher

The teacher’s face darkened—he flew into a rage;
with bulging-eyed fury he snatched at the page—
half-ripped as he shouted, “Get out of my classroom
you foolish giraffe!” Then, grabbing a broom
he chased Peter outside and slapped his behind.
“None enters my classroom with your kind of mind.
I only accept great intelligence here.
How badly you've failed,” teacher snarled with a sneer.

The Honest Student

Surprisingly, Peter stayed calm and composed.
“Have you nothing to say to me?” Teacher proposed.
Our young Peter smiled. “Sir, the lesson was hard.
I have practiced at home when my brothers have sparred.”

“How odd,” said the Teacher, “now, what do you mean?
What is the first lesson? Just what did you glean?”
To never get angry,” sweet Peter replied.
“In all circumstances, to conquer my pride.”

Our Peter proved smarter than all, where it counted.
His knowledge, thus practiced, to wisdom amounted.

LOVED how this ended. Oh, how I laughed! And as a retired teacher, it was good to read some stuff about education...

Oscar Wilde had very wild beliefs in humanistic interactions too....
Reminds me of the Zoo Keeper which was released on the 28th of September 2011 in Auckland New Zealand along with Lion King.

Beautiful poems! You have courage, ability and wit. A tenderness is diffused through the lines and words. You are a good person and a kind soul. I have a very good friend in Yaps, she is from your country. An excellent soul, a lady, and in a way my protegee in there. Thank you for everything!

Thanks for your lovely comments, Nikiforus. I admire your poetry avidly and am glad you stopped by to read mine. This one is a bit out of the box for me, and i had fun with it. I am actually from USA, not India. Have lived in India for 20 years, though. ;-) Thanks again for your generous comments.
