Getting the next step completed is what this series of inspirational thoughts by Peter B. Giblett is all about. Take a look at any list of things you have to progress and I will guarantee you have a project on there you will not start either because you are afraid how it will turn out or because you cannot envision the end result. Time to start on it now.
You Don’t have to Get it Right, You just have to Get it Going
We are often afraid to start any project simply because we are afraid that the final outcome will not be perfect or because we cannot envision how it will end. In striving for the perfect answer we are forgetting to move the project forward, even a little bit.
Take a list at your current to-does and pick a long outstanding project and start moving it forwards. You owe yourself this now. The point being that if you firstly define the initial task to be completed then you will start moving the project forwards. The old excuses as to why you could not start the project will no longer apply. As you move forward the final solution will present itself, even if you have no idea of what that is today.
Mike Litman is a popular motivational speaker and is credited with formulating the concept "you don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going". His point we don't get things done simply because we do not start them. Well it is your opportunity to start something and each day spend a little time progressing it.
This concept is similar to my one of starting a mini-project, the point is that we all have a long list of things that are yet to be started and until we start them we have no chance of completing them. I think here today of Thomas Edison toiling away in his workshop, just across the river from me, to produce electricity, the project had to be started in order for his team to attempt to create electric light 9,999 times before succeeding (or so the story goes) but without starting it was simply a good idea hatched out in front of inferior candlelight.
Some Assistance from this Series
- ► Progress a Project
► Progress Review
► Go and Take a Walk
► Use a little Original Thinking
► Will and Determination
► Take a Little Time to Review
► Believe in Yourself
► One Step Towards Success
► Which Direction do you Wish to Go?
► How Have you Been Doing?
► Reach a Personal Milestone
Without starting anything you cannot reach your personal milestone. Once you reach that milestone you can celebrate success. The end result may be different that how you first envisaged it, but without making that start you will not have succeeded on the journey.

Thank you, Peter. A friend used to say to me, "I'm a perfectionist. If I can't get it perfect, I won't do it at all." (She applied this usually to housework and I tend to think that way sometimes.

I used to be a perfectionist, but got so little done that it used to bug me. I still have many perfectionist tendencies but have learned to get things going because the answer will come.

The fear of failure is a huge stumbling block for many people. Good tips to over come.

Peter, this is so darn true. We just got to get going. I know I have two things I have not yet completed and I have to admit, it keeps gnawing at me. As always, thank you for sharing.:)

Peter, excellent and spot on as always. This really applied to my life this week. I took a chance at doing some different writing. I thought i may not excel, but at least I took a chance and got it started :-)
