Sand in my Shoes
A poem written after going to the beach. Written several years ago.
Sand in my shoes
Sitting alone on these brown little rocks
Taken off my shoes and now taken off my socks
Letting the water trickle through my toes
Secrets running through my head that nobody else knows
Little green crab what life have you led?
Did you find the one you love, or were you full of dread?
Throw a Frisbee under the sun
Laughing, smiling, simply having fun
Carefree and happy, nothing’s in the way
Everybody’s smiling on this glorious day
Collecting shells with a friend
Never want this day to end
Breathe in the smoke from all around
Coughs and splutters are the only sound
Move away from the barbeque
Turn around and smile for you
People cycle past us all
Big ones, small ones, short ones, tall
They don’t know what’s in our heads
Or what we dream when we lie in our beds
But they see us all laughing loud
And it makes me feel ecstatic and proud
To know that our day is ours alone
Every sand grain, every stone
Pick up some seaweed to treasure forever
Two little pieces joined together
Pick up a clam and wonder what its like to be
Hidden in that shell at the bottom of the sea
Throw away the Frisbee, I’ll go wading in
Deeper and deeper, wishing I had fins
What must it be like to be a creature in here?
Do they know how to have fun, and how to feel fear?
It’s at the beach I feel inspired
Breathing in the salty air, refreshes when I’m tired
At the shore where the waves steadily break
I’m full of ideas and none are fake
Feeling different textures beneath my feet
And different temperatures; the cold of the waves, the sun’s heat
All bringing together today’s memories
And forging wishes for more days like these.
