Who can buy their way across the river Styx in death? This poem embraces the idea that the rich should not gain passage and leave the poor to suffer their souls at the bottom of the river for eternity. A beautiful soul is the wealth and should be what buys passage! This is from my book, "Winter's Chill." Chosen for obvious reasons!
When the Pale Horse Waits
When darkness creeps amidst fragile ones
who lost the feel to crawl,
death lingers without haste
to stand at shadow's crossing gate
and wait in silent watch,
as cries plead, they rise in vain
for a hand to harbor mercy,
this innocence breathes confusion
with eyes that suffer no knowledge of its fate,
to live a simple life for love, food, and breath
offers no earthly covets bright as golden coins
required to satisfy the boatman's treasure pouch
on a journey through endless seas,
passage should be found on a seat of crowns for a humble soul
continued:
A grimace worn in greed's expression
threw redemption into rivers' depth,
wealth embodied arrogance supplied by comfort's boat
cradled ride beyond stone graves kept by the living,
Charon, please, ferry those that travel light
clothed only in pure heart and spirit
never ask for shiny objects bound
within green lands of the enduring,
Styx moves from tears created of lost dreams
that tried and failed to pass this gate before,
owned by souls that paid eternities dues
on shores of one hundred years or more,
make no waves, oh specter, let death trangress on roads
of no attachments so the call home to peace is free for all . . .
Still the pale horse waits
