Some words have become part of our unconscious being and therefore are more authentic than those we have to look up in a thesaurus.
Writing from the Marrow of the Bone
The words I have now
are the only words that feel authentic.
They have been chewed, swallowed
and digested over years.
They have lived in my hearts blood
and in my brain, my nerves, my cells.
I use them to describe my experience
to myself inside.
When they leave my fingers
and appear on the page
they take a part of me with them
out into the world.
So I won’t be doing crosswords
to learn words that don’t come
naturally to my tongue.
And I won’t be using the Thesaurus
or the dictionary either to find words
that are not part of my biology.
I’ll stick with the ones I trust
and know.
And call it writing from the marrow
of the bone.

I do that too - what comes naturally. Some just appear from nowhere after decades - yes, from the marrow of our bones. Thanks C D Moore - siva
