This one is for my brother who explained to me what "hustling" was shortly after one of this stints in jail.

hustling

we keep alert
watchful
guard up
as we glide across the littered parking lot
become part of the night
there
among the old
rusted
dead
and dented cars
scattered around
like the dead husks
left behind from a locust swarm
derelict buildings
empty homes
abandoned
decaying
gutters clogged with trash
yards and lots
full of weeds
broken children’s toys
and various debris
we are on our way to nothingness
dead in our sneakers
crawling out of our skin
time
will never be on our side
built to survive
built to last
we have no future
we try not to think about the past
it is only about the here and now
this moment in time
we have our game faces on
the war paint only we can see
we ask for nothing
and we give nothing in return
