my front yard

A poem about standing in my front yard and coming to the sudden realization that my lawn is just a giant miniature jungle.

my front yard

fireflies
dance among moon beams
stars twinkle in the sky
a commercial jet
passes low
overhead
navigation lights
blinking slow
red and yellow
a lone fat toad
squatting
under the front porch light
feasting
on June bugs
moths
and strange tiny things
crawling
in the humid summer night
I stand there
and think
what an odd world that must be
my front yard
the lawn
a diverse
miniature
Midwestern jungle
to a whole horde
of mysterious
and even monstrous
little things
flying
crawling
hopping
together
struggling to survive
just like everything
and everyone
else
