"Rumble in the Jungle" was an historic boxing event that took place four decades ago, which pitted world heavyweight champion George Foreman against challenger Muhammad Ali.

The Greatest Sporting Event of the 20th Century

Forty years ago, on October 30, 1974, the greatest sporting event of the 20th century took place in Kinshasa, Zaire at the 20th of May Stadium. The historic event was called “Rumble in the Jungle,” a heavyweight championship boxing match between undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman and challenger Muhammad Ali. Don King promoted the event.

Most people felt Muhammad Ali was not only going to lose the match, but die in the ring. He suffered loses to Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, two heavyweights George Foreman dominated in less than three rounds. Greatly feared for his incredible punching power, imposing size, and sheer physical dominance, George Foreman seemed an overpowering favorite against Muhammad Ali.

Against all the odds, Muhammad Ali did the impossible. Utilizing his hand speed and "rope-a-dope" tactic much of the fight, Muhammad Ali knocked George Foreman out before the end of the eighth round, and regained his world heavyweight crown. It was perhaps the greatest victory in Ali’s boxing career. He cemented his reputation as “The Greatest” and reached mythical proportions. Sports Illustrated magazine awarded Muhammad Ali their “Sportsman of the Year” award.

Twenty years after “Rumble in the Jungle,” George Foreman regained his heavyweight crown by defeating Michael Moorer. At the age of 45, George Foreman became the oldest prizefighter ever to win the championship at the time. Ironically, George Foreman wore the same red trunks he had worn in his title loss to Muhammad Ali 20 years earlier.
