Bible is a literary powerful tool used to promote many idealogies. One of the ideologies the Bible seems to support is the suppression of women or the view that man should subordinate woman. This article gives 10 of these reasons from the first book of the Bible, the Genesis and its creation story.

7 Views In Support of Insubordination of Women

Many Bible readers who read from patriarchal ideological point of view seem to see the creation story in the book of Genesis 2: 2b- 3 supports their cultrural ideology that men should be head and rule over the women. Women are to serve men. Their 7 reasons are given here.

Reason number one: Man's Prior Creation

In Genesis chapter 2, Adam (man) is created first. As man is created first, the patriarchalists and many in male dominated cultures hold that the Bible is supporting their views that man should be head of the family. The prior creation of man makes him to be head and must rule over the Eve (woman) who was created second in sequence.

Reason number two: The woman is the substance of the man

The woman was made from the ribs of the man, therefore, the woman is not total a substance of her own, but a by product of man. As such the woman must submit to the man whose substance she was made from.

Reason number three: The man named the woman

When God created Adam, he was lonely. God planned to create a suitable campanion. God created all kinds of animals and brought them to Adam. Adam named them and they are called what Adam named them. However, none of these animals fitted well to be his campanion and helper. He was still lonely so God created Eve out of his ribs and brought her to him. Adam looked at her and called her Eve, the mother of the living. Eve is argued as treated by God like all the animals. Ghen God created the animals. God brought them to Adam and he named them. Likewise Eve was brought to Adam and he named her. It is belived that a person of higher power and authroity named people of lower status. Man, becuase of his higher calling and status named the woman so woman must serve man and submit to him, argues the patriarchalists.

Reason number four: Woman has the distorted Image of God.

Becuase of the prior creation of man, he was created with the accurate image of God. But the woman was created out of the substance of man, the woman was not created with accurate image of God, but a distorted one. She will not reflect God's image fully. Because of the nature of their substance make up and sequence of her creation, she can only reflect distorted image of God. She does not have the full potential to protect God fully therefore she must serve man who will serve God fully because of his prior creation.

Reason number five: Woman was made to be helper

Many hold the ideology that woman should serve man use Bible as their defence that Bible was explicit that God created woman as a helper. Her primary work for her creation was to help man. She is nothing more, but a help to man. A helper who works behind the scenes to promote the one who is the head. For this reason, the woman should be helper and support man in his work and be subject to him.

Reason number six: Man was the first to recieve enlightment from God

In Genesis 2 creation story, it was the man who recieved the instruction from God that he was allowed to eat of all the fruits of all the trees in the garden except the one of the tree of life in the middle of the garden. This teaching was not taught directly to the woman. She must have been taught by the man. Man directly communicated with God and he was bestowed this special status of recieveing direct revelation of God. The woman did not recieve the direct teaching from God so she should be humble and listen to man, the one who recieved direct revelation from God. The woman must depend on the man for wisdom and advice.

Reason number seven: The woman was the first to sin

In Genesis 3, woman is depicted as the weak one Satan was targetting to attack. When satan tempted her, she fell and commited the sin that saw the fall of humanity. She is accused of being the gate of hell in which Satan opened to send humanity to hell. Because of her, the world lost its goodness. She must be humble and serve her husband and rightly so she cursed just to do that.

Interesting - when I look at how male lions behave they corroborate this thinking! The lionesses mostly do the killing and allow the their male to have the first bite, even to their heart's content!

Other religions also have a male bias but Hindus have Goddesses too, one too many!

Now the women have the men on the run to get even! siva

That is true, the animal kingdom does have this male superiority culture as we do in human societies.

Or might it just be that the authors of Genesis were all men?!

Many feminist theologians and writers do argee with your view. They would say that the biblical writers were male and many of their writings were inflenced by their patriarchal ideology.

I read Genesis and it seems like a soap opera. However, women are more educated then men. Some even earn more then men.

You are right, Ken. Civil moments and others who fight for gender equality do promote girls and women and now we see women are equal in many things with men.

Most of the world's ills can be traced directly to the patriarchy. One only has to observe women from day to day to see how much more spiritually attuned they are than men.
