Introduction to a writer of History and English culture who joined Wikinut recently and has started with a bang and some very great, well written articles. Let us welcome this guy.

Wikinut missed you so long!

One of the folks I knew on Bubblews used to write a lot on topics of History and English culture. Somehow, I found not many readers of his work on Bubblews. Yet his writing looked more suitable for Wikinut. Recently, I suggested him to join Wikinut. He did so, perhaps in some part due to my suggestion(any other reason I can only guess). This person is :
John Welford, who uses username "Bookworm" on Bubblews. He looks like a Professional writer, though I am yet to confirm that.
He has started quite well on Wikinut with articles on:

In fact, he can perhaps share some of his very old Bubblews works on Wikinut, and I have a feeling that his work will be lapped up here and well appreciated. Yes, he might not be able to mint as much as he is doing on Bubblews, but I think he will appreciate the audience and (at times) detailed conversation that happens(like some on Steve's and Phyl's articles).
I feel that Wikinut missed this writer for a long time. He will definitely enlighten us with his knowledge and writing.

So let us welcome John to Wikinut's fold!

Sir, this is a writer that I connected with his first day on Wikinut and have also connected on Bubblews.

Wow! This is a surprise! Thanks for the welcome, Ptrikha, but it is not just modesty that makes me say that 'great' is going several steps too far!

I have to say that I have mixed feelings about Bubblews. Although it does pay well, it allows far too much rubbish on board for my liking, and I regard it purely as a 'cash cow' - I will continue to write there, but it won't get pieces from me on which I have expended all that much effort.

I cut my writing teeth at Helium, where I contributed more than 1000 articles over a 5-year period. Helium is now closing down, and I have been looking for somewhere that could be a new home for the pieces I wrote there (updated and tweaked a bit). I also want somewhere that will welcome new pieces, both long and short, formal and informal, and on a wide range of topics. From what I have seen so far, Wikinut could well be what I am looking for - only time will tell.

I think you will find Wikinut a much better platform than even helium.

John, I know we all make mistakes, but there are all too many writers on the web who feel it is essential to rush to publish. It is my belief that a good writer will be successful anywhere they choose to write, but it will be difficult to rid any site of the junk unless their is some form of editorial control.

Absolutely! I was involved in the editorial side of things at Helium - I looked after the whole of Arts and Humanities at one time - and I am well aware of the need for quality control. However, I think some people at Helium went too far and got very nit-picky - I was once pulled up for breaking the "no first person" rule when I used the expression "our solar system" in an Astronomy article! I think their fetish for quality at all costs led to many people abandoning the site.

On the other hand, the free-for-all at Bubblews does nobody any favours either. Many of the pieces there are low quality to the point of no quality.

From what I have seen so far of the standard of articles on Wikinut, you seem to have got the balance about right. Any real rubbish will be weeded out, but people who do not write in perfect English are not discouraged either. I like what I see!

Thanks, Ptrihka and welcome, John! A great introduction. Looking forward to our little chats re: lit and language. For the record my degree is in English lit, but my focus was on teaching teens who wouldn't care. I am often irreverent and that's the way (uh huh, uh huh) I like it (uh huh, uh huh). ;)

Thanks Phyl, and I hope you keep on checking my articles, apart from great works by writers like Peter, John, Steve and Siva.

One of a kind post, Ptrikha, you have given a great intro and extended a warm welcome that will touch anyone. I am rather picky in choosing a site to write as there should not be many careless posts or people out to make hay while the sun shines! Wikinut has all kinds with moderators too to maintain quality, and we can choose to follow those that make our day. Thanks for mentioning my name too in your "select list". To keep posting good and relevant articles is a challenge and that is how it should be to enjoy the camaraderie. I have read only one of John Welford's posts and I knew he is erudite; so I have to catch up with his other posts and include him in the list of must reads - siva

I have seen that John already has some Star Pages, and has written some very great articles. In fact, I used to see that some of his great work on Bubblews hardly got any attention there. It seems even the good writers on Bubblews do not have time to check some of the fine posts.
