Reply to a love-letter sometimes shall be a stone pasted over with honey

Thank you for your letter filled with love;
You wrote you liked to meet me right now!

We’re far apart and hence no repulsion
Is between us. Don’t take this for evasion
Let me make it plain: O dear, perfection
That we see in every bit of creation
Is only a matter of distance;
once very near
Sprouts lust, which I fear!

Great love is the one unstained of any lust
Though for perpetuation it is nature’s must
Think of a mother’s love towards her child
And see fighting couples’ behavior wild.

Distance and mystery are the parents of all beauty
And proximity makes anything dirty:
What emerald forest, sandy beach, sinuous rill
Garden, waterfall, grassy hill,
A lonely star or the sun
If very near, have their real fun?
(Smell of sweat frightens me embracing
And foul air kissing)

Think of that my dear, and write to me so often;
As you remain there, I shall write till drains my pen!
