A Look Back

An observation of a moment in time where the soul, mind, & body are renewed.

A Look Back

It was very late summer/early fall, the first of October, in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains of east Tennessee and I was renting a log cabin in a small mountain community. My wife and I had wanted to have a “get away” week from our jobs in order to sit, read, and maybe explore a little bit to give our minds and bodies a break from what had become a numbing routine of daily existence.

The cabin was perfect, nestled on a semi-wooded knoll facing the Plateau vista with no other homes around or in sight. Sitting on the covered front porch of the cabin you could only hear the rustle of the somewhat steady breeze coming across the hill and softly brushing the tall grass in the front yard. It was simply heaven to sit with my book on the porch in the warmth of the sun with only the bird’s song to accompany me. It was then that my mind opened the coffer of memories in my head and took me immediately back to when I was about 8 or 9 years of age. Remembering a modest two-bedroom house my family lived in just outside the city limits of west Asheville, where I would play outside for as long as my mother would allow each warm summer/fall day. It was then I first experienced that fall-ish breeze on my face, warm but with a hint of coolness that announced winter would soon appear. At that time in my young life I had no real worries, except getting grass stains on my pants, and all of the goodness of youth coupled with a caring family enveloped me in a cocoon of richness and I just played and played to my hearts content.

It was this lovely memory that came back to me in it’s fullness that warm afternoon at the rented cabin and renewed my soul and provided an appreciation of life (from my current perspective) with a simple look back.

You know, Winsome, I used to be an avid reader of Louis L'Amour westerns, and your rendition of: "It was very late summer/early fall, the first of October, in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains of east Tennessee and I was renting a log cabin in a small mountain community." Yanked me right out of my chair in the city of Durban in South Africa, and slapped me down right there on the porch of that community of east Tennessee. Louis's books used to do that for me. Man you aught to take several more such sojourns and conjure up more of those spectacular literary visions my friend.Thank you so much.
