Remembrance of my childhood keep flashing before my eyes

Do you remember getting a new suit and shoes... for Easter Sunday morning at church?

Remember when your mom bought your school clothes a size or two larger and said, “You’ll grow into them…” Or when she took you to buy shoes and she would pinch on your toes and say, “Is that too tight…” then purchase the next larger size saying, “He’ll grow into them?” Do you remember getting a new suit and shoes, or dress, shoes and purse if you’re a girl for Easter Sunday morning at church? Oh, I forgot the little hat, or bonnet to match the shoes, purse and dress. We always went a week or two early to shop for Easter but mom wouldn’t let us wear them before that… “They’re for Easter,” she would say.

I ask Mr. Ross if he was getting a new pair of Easter shoes too...

One spring after we had remolded our house and things had settled down a little, mom took me downtown and bought a little suit at HP Kings department store, and then we walked down the street a couple of blocks to the Boston Shoe Store where Mr. Morris Ross was the manager; he always waited on us. Mom got me a new pair of penny loafers, the first non-tie shoes I ever had and cautioned me that I could not wear them until Easter Sunday morning. I agreed. We thought Mr. Ross was a very nice man, and when he left to ring up my shoes, mom whispered to me that Mr. Ross was a Jew, but I didn’t know what that meant except I had heard at church that Jesus was a Jew too, so I guess that was all right. When he returned with our package I ask Mr. Ross if he was getting a new pair of Easter shoes too, with that mom just pulled my arm and said shhh. Then after we got back to the car she explained that the Jews did not celebrate Easter like we do. I didn’t fully understand that either.

We all prayed hard that Jesus would protect our mom real good

That next week my mother was checked into the old King’s Mountain Memorial Hospital to have surgery. I didn’t even know what surgery was but my big sister Peggy said it was pretty serious. We all prayed hard that Jesus would protect our mom real good. My sister thought of a special gift we could give to mom after she got out of the hospital, but we boys had to promise not to ‘spill the beans’. Next day Peggy drove us down to the photo studio. I had never seen one before and I was amazed at all the lights and things. We all wore our Easter clothes and shoes and the nice man took our picture.

“Sammy always keeps his promises, mother…”

Peggy cautioned us every day to not let our secret out to mom, about having the picture taken or else it wouldn’t be a surprise while assuring us it would be a swell gift. Peggy and Jim and Jack had visited mom at the hospital but I hadn’t. I wanted to go too because I had never been to a hospital before…, except when I was born and I didn’t remember that. I had to promise that I would hold her hand and not pull away from her when we walked in. I never pulled away; I was really scared - with all those people scurrying around in white uniforms carrying needles and bedpans. I clutched her hand tightly.

I saw mom, she was laying in this big bed with tubes going in her arms and nose. I managed to say, “Are you ok, mom,” she smiled and said she was and that she would get to come home Friday if every thing went ok. I told he that we had all been praying for her, and then she asked me. “Have you had your new shoes on?” My mouth flew open. I had never lied to my mother. If I answered yes, she would want to know why. Our special gift to mom rested on my answer. I looked up to Peggy but she just keep her gaze on mother. Then I felt her place my fingers in a crossed position and she answered for me. “Sammy always keeps his promises, mother…”

I heard that! and it is only July. The hot months lie ahead, August and September. A concern for us near the coast is how the heat is heating up the water for huricane season. My brother and his wife living in Boynton Beach, Florida. Stay cool Sam.
