A Memory

A very satisfying visit with a precise and pleasant memory.

A Memory

So unique is the human mind that just a wisp of a smell or a hint of a sound can evoke a cavalcade of thoughts, memories, and emotions. As it was one day last week when I was perusing some possible purchases of musical CD’s on line. You can actually hear brief snippets of the song tracks to see if the album is the one you want and I was doing just that; when I came across a 1967-1970 popular duo that had a set of trademark songs for that era. So I stopped and began what turned out to be my afternoon sojourn into a truly wonderful memory; or a composite of memories in retrospect.

But the remarkable thing was that I really got into the feelings that had existed back then and while I never truly appreciated those emotions at the time; I came to such awareness upon my revisit that I was smitten with almost newness again. In hindsight it was like I was looking at innocence for the first time but from a respectful distance. And that distance was made from maturity and life experience and while I felt the innocence I lamented at the very same time the fact that I had let it pass so nonchalantly the first time, when I was young. And of course knew in my heart that it would never come my way, that way, again. At that point I began to remember everything, (even almost to feel) the physical places, the smells and touches of another person, the excitement of her glance, and the sensation of her being there.

Even after the particular song passed on to the refrain of another, my mind stayed in the harmony of the moment to savor for as long as it lasted. But then like children we all pass from the neverland of youth into the stark realities of our adult life so did I move in my mind from the surreal comfort of memory back to the awareness of the now.

I know exactly what you mean about sounds and smells evoking memories. It is amazing how vivid they can be. You've captured this nicely.
