The story of the building of a nation with hard woks, factories, and the workers who man them.

A Nation is Born

A Nation is Born

The nation was defined with the sound of percussion,
the bang, and the clang, and the smash, and the bash
the continual pounding of steal on steal, hammer on nail,
sweat so thick, so pungent it breaks the day.
All around one hears the clickitty-clickitty-clack
of the clattering trains, the boxcars rattling brim-full
with coal, and coke, and iron ore for the factories
hungry blast furnace blowing sparks of the future into full view,
crack-ass loud and sharp as molten metal is poured
white hot into the gasket forms, the building blocks,
the skitters, the gears, the bearings, shanks, and steal ties.
While overhead the billowing smoke rises, like a thin smile
into its blackened climax, chocking the living breath out,
blotting away the chain hung lights.
While below, the workmen scurry about
in their filthy work clothes with black snot noses.
Soon the lunch bell will toll and the clatter of black metal boxes
will break the day into bit-size pieces.
Dirty fingers, and dirty faces, chewing dirty sandwiches with dirty teeth
never missing a crumb or a beat and only eight hours to go
before the foreman lets the young boys slip home
to do their evening chores in the smoky daylight dawn.
A nation is born.

I have been writing since the beginning of time it seems, not because I want to write, but because I have too. My favorite form of writing is poetry, all kinds and types of poetry.
