A Soldier's Thoughts

Iā€™m glad for rations,

Was tired of green eggs,

Sand all in my mouth,

And inside my boots,

Sand, gritty, dirty,

Grating skin and nerves,

The heat is so hot,

But night is so cool,

All seen ā€“ sand and sky,

Then blackness and stars,

Day in and night out,

A pattern not seen,

Firefights remembered,

Eternity drags,

Relived slow motion,

Every moment clear,

Fear no longer counts,

As duty takes fore,

Being brave second,

Job needs to be done,

Sweat, aches, weariness,

Now grass feels like home.
