A Touch of Humor - Newfoundland Style

Some supposedly true stories that I heard in my youth.

Keeping the man in the box

Back in the 1930’s there were few radios in the small communities that dotted the coastline of the rugged shores of Newfoundland, and many of the elderly people hadn’t even heard of it. When his son returned from the city with a radio, one man was particularly intrigued. A few days later, being alone in the house, he turned on the radio only to find what appeared to him to be an important news bulletin but having no understanding of what was being said, he felt his son should hear it. He quickly shut it off saying, “I’ll just keep him inside the box until John gets home”.

A radio - Just something else to cause trouble

While on the subject of radio, it seems there was this little old lady who had never heard of such a thing until one day a neighbour’s son returned to the community with a radio as a gift for his parents. There was much excitement in the little town as people flocked to the house to hear a radio for the first time. The old lady however, refused even to go near the place. She was very proud of her garden and all that summer had been frustrated with goats getting at her vegetables. As someone was passing by, she was heard to mutter “radio indeed, just something else to get in the garden and eat my carrots!

"Have Patience"

Bill and Eve had two daughters named Elizabeth and Patience. Although she was now 21, Patience had no boyfriend but Elizabeth though only17 had been dating the same young man for more than a year. Bill was not really surprised when the twenty year old young man approached him one day to ask for Elizabeth’s hand in marriage. Thinking that the couple should wait awhile rather than rush into marriage at such a young age, Bill replied, “have patience, have patience”. He was rather taken aback however, by the young man’s very sincere response, “but sir, it’s not Patience I want, Its Elizabeth”.

Good laugh, Kingwell. My father was a doctor of medicine, but he chose to teach and became a professor as he lacked patience (not patients!) - siva
