Abishag did sleep with David. She had no sexual relations with him. Abishag remained a virgin. physicians hope that the vibrancy of her youth would revitalise the life of David.

The greatest promotion

When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. 1 Kings 1:1
His servants made what seems like a good suggestion. Abishag cares for David
"Let them seek a young virgin for my lord the king, and let her attend the king and become his nurse; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm” King David is sinking under his infirmities. In his old age. King David, was chastised by God for his recent sins, and now he is feeling the effects of his former toils and hardships. Stricken in years”: David was 70 years old (2 Sam 5:4-5)

David was probably now about sixty-nine years of age. He was thirty years old when he began to reign, reigned forty years, and died in his seventieth year. The transactions mentioned here were supposed to have taken place about a year before his death. By entering old age, they cover him with garments. David having no natural heat in him, clothes could not communicate any to him, only to keep the cold from him. There are many persons at the age he was, that are lively, healthful, and robust, comparatively speaking at least; but David's strength was impaired, and his natural force abated by his many wars, fatigues by night and day in campaigns, and the many sorrows and afflictions he met with from his family and his friends.

As well as enemies; which exhausted his natural moisture, weakened his nerves, and drank up his spirits, and brought upon him the infirmities of old age sooner than it should have been. David was extremely sick with old age diseases. He was cold because the circulation in his body was poor. The cover did not help him because the heat of his body was not enough to warm him up. The youth of this virgin would cause her to be vitally alive. When she lay under the covers with David, her body would put off heat. A person in the condition of David would welcome death to this old worn out body.
This vibrantly, alive, young girl prescribed by David's physician, was supposed to revitalise whatever life was left in David. but sadly, this suggestion did not work. Abishag was from the tribe of Issachar. She was there to nurse David back to health. She had no choice in the matter. The king needed her and she came. She slept with him to warm his body up. He never knew her in a personal relationship. She was there as his nurse. Abishag did sleep with David. She had no sexual relations with him. Abishag remained a virgin.

In our passage, King David is in the closing days of his reign, said something truly remarkable. He was a successful monarch, the most decorated king in Israel. Ordained from he was a young man, having grown older and wiser. He now comes right to the point of the disclosed and said: who is willing. To serve in any office, first a person must be willing to put themselves forward by force or bribery, but a willing participant. He wanted to build the Temple but God forbade him to do this. Instead Solomon his son was given the task, Solomon was industrious and a man of peace, whereas David was a man of war and had shed much blood. Although he was denied in one way, he was committed to serving in another way. When one door is closed, God will open another for you. When one opportunity is missing, another will arrive. When you think, you are the last, you can be the first. When it seems like you are going down, you are about to have your greatest promotion. When you lose one job there is another waiting especially for you, when you are in the service working for God, the salary may not be high, but the benefits are great. When it is winter in the world it is summer in your heart. When others forsake you, God will lift you up. Trouble don’t last forever, there is always an eye in the middle of the storm. When you think it’s too late, you are still early, your blessing has just begun to pour out; it’s time to draw near to God with full assurance. Who then is willing to consecrate his serve to the Lord? It is a question to be answered and not to be ignored, for if you are not willing to answer by audible words then your conscience will answer for you. Set back did not stop David preparing "with all my might". He gathered gold, silver, and precious stones in abundance. He did it whenever the opportunity presented itself. He did not blame anyone, nor did he rely on anyone apart from God, and the experience he had gathered from a lifetime of battles, he now turns it into the service of the lord, and in so doing bring others into the picture. Here was a man full of zeal and passion for the House of God. He laboured mightily because he was dedicated to the Lords work. He then confronts the people with this searching question. Who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord?" (1 Chronicles 29.5)

God is searching for individuals who are willing to serve in the different capacity, treasures, managers, secretary, fundraisers, cooks, cleaners, officers, president, and helpers. Which one are you? David throws out a challenge, for God loves us when we challenge difficult things, God never chooses a lazy person to do his work, it’s always an industrious hard working person. It was not a question of how or when, but it was a personal appeal to the people of God because not all saints are consecrated. So, the question is thrown out to a large group of people, who may not serve this year but could do in the future become the useful asset to the society. The world with its pleasures and treasures, education, and entertainment, claims and aims, anxieties and ambitions has impeded Christians from going forward, notice what Jesus said. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself take up his cross and follow me" (Mt 16.24). Later, as David enters his final days we see Bathsheba went into the king in the bedroom. Now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king.

This is a really good word Gerry.
I very much like the paragraph that speaks of the blessings in exchange for our negatives.
Many blessings to you today
