Adam is taken to the college dorm where he is introduced to his roommate. The following day the two boys pick up their textbooks at Dicks And Company.

The New Roommate.

When Adam arrived at the college residence on the night of September 5th he was taken to his dorm room and introduced to his roommate who had arrived from Gander earlier that day. Winston Janes, who had traveled to St. John’s by train, was just a few weeks older than Adam, having celebrated his birthday in May of that year. Winston’s father worked with the international airport in Gander and he had attended a three room Roman Catholic school. Although the town was much larger then even Petersview, the school was no better, in fact the whole school system outside St. John’s was deplorable.

Deplorable School System

When Commission of Government had taken over the governing of the island in 1934, one of the first items of business was to do something about the sorry state of education in the country. Teachers were underpaid and poorly trained, the curriculum was out of date, and school enrollment was low. Most children who did attend classes went to dilapidated and overcrowded buildings that rarely had access to heat or running water. Although the Commission was able to make significant changes, it encountered numerous obstacles. The country’s poor financial situation, compounded by a worldwide depression, made it difficult to build new schools, upgrade existing ones, and implement other changes. The denominational education system also created much tension between the state and the various Churches, and the country’s scattered population made it difficult to provide accessible education.

A New Beginning.

In spite of having been similarly schooled there was one big difference between the two boys. While Adam had fished with his father every summer since he was twelve and was almost as much at home on sea as on land, Winston had never set foot in a boat. Since they were expected to register for classes the next morning the boys retired around midnight. Sleep was a long time in coming however, but eventually both drifted off, Adam still feeling the swaying of the boat, and Winston the movement of the train as it made it’s way to one small station after another. Breakfast was served at 8 AM and the boys were waiting in line with some forty other students. Registration started at 9:00 and afterwards everyone received a list of their required textbooks which could be purchased at Dicks and Company on Water Street. When Adam and Winston arrived at the bookstore that afternoon, it was already doing a brisk business. Within an hour however, they had made their purchases and were headed back to campus.

I remember my excitement every time I bought text books - of course, those were wonder filled years before the all consuming internet to break knowledge barriers. Lovely story telling, thanks Kingwell - siva

Kingwell, awesome Chapter. The thought of starting a brand new life of learning makes me smile. I loved the part where the boys had to go to the book store to purchase the books needed. To me life doesn't get much better than that. I love walking in a book store. It doesn't matter what kind or where it is. I love books. I always have. I can remember the year I was 12 and spent at least two evenings a week at the library. I'm always happy surrounded by books. Smiles to you this morning.
