After the euphoria welcoming the New Year, follow-up with real action

Let us make New Year celebrations real beyond the light and sound. For that, follow-up actions on crucial issues are necessary, where everyone exercises democratic will.

Going beyond light and sound

Despite the many issues that cramp our daily lifestyles, we have every right to celebrate in style the New Year. However, if we are back to our set ways after the lights and sound that welcomed the New Year have died down, we could well start regressing. Things have come to such a pass that ignoring them could make us pay the price at compound interest, calculated on a daily basis! But the positive spin is they are solvable, but we need a change in thinking.

Basics that give meaning to our lives

Public participation: Each one has to go beyond mere voting to elect our leaders. We have increasing social media takes, and expert views in the main media to nudge us to solve our problems on consensus. Of course, there are issues that look simple from the outside, but could well be tough to negotiate leading to a compromise. Our leaders should be explicit with the issues, options available, and iron-out the differences with public backing and implement the solutions on a participatory basis. A truly democratic will at play!

World peace: We know from experience that adversaries blink at the last moment after much public posturing! Why not the UN and others given authority, play a more purposeful role to lead to time-bound resolution of issues? Those that come with much emotional baggage can be put on deep-freeze for the time being. The major powers have to make united resolve than play individual tunes adding oil to the raging fires. We have had enough of these public posturing using smaller countries as pawns in their games.

National interests to trump; Democracies fail to deliver on their promises mainly due to political bickering that dies not with each election. They are ongoing, sometimes endangering countries’ vital interests. It is an endless play to attract the public attention, keep them riveted on issues that are trivial when taken as a whole to others that impact the welfare of citizens. A few no-goes; thus far and no more, will help us to focus on real issues, and help us not to lose our focus.

Global village: Increasingly the concept that the welfare of all countries is inextricably intertwined is coming to the fore. That means we need basic understanding among countries on matters that are crucial to humanity’s long term survival. When everyone depends on others, why pull each other down on a daily basis?

Make New Year last everyday

All issues that impact us have to be relooked periodically and what better time than at the start of every New Year. We should work on a score sheet to keep tabs on the progress we make, first identifying the problems and then setting time-bound programs to solve them. We have every reason to celebrate the oneness of humanity every year, but let us go beyond some customary, fleeting euphoria that is soon forgotten; are we not at each others’ throats too soon? Individually we are guilty of forgetting our own New Year resolutions, but collectively we need to make more efforts, at least once a year, to get to another level of coexistence. That will give much more oomph to the meaning of globalization. With every passing day, we are made more and more aware that little separates our aspirations for a better life through meaningful and purposeful existence. Let us just go beyond some perfunctory celebrations to make them last throughout the year.
