This is a fictional poem that is written to illustrate how serious compulsive gambling can be and what some of the consequences of uncontrolled gambling are

An Inflated Ego

Though you gambled away in less than a day
our house and our money nearly 16 years ago today
your inflated ego still gets in the way
and I don't know just what to say
except that I wonder how you can expect to keep your sobriety
from an addiction that is now gaining in notoriety
if you don't take any action or responsibility
for taking care of yourself?
It seems to me that you have put your meetings on the shelf
because your ego has grown
to such an inflated state that you think you can handle things on your own
even if that will result in your being alone!
May I remind you, my ex-spouse
that you still owe me money
from your last gambling rampage
that caused excessive damage
to the point that we are no longer married?
I am still suffering from the pain that I carried
when you abused and you neglected your wedding vow
and slept with other women to pay them back, wow!
Do not think for an instant or a minute
that you have ended your addiction yet;
this is a life-long disease and you must fight
this with all of your might,
despite the fact that your inflated ego
tells you that you don't need to go
to meetings any more;
a belief that makes those around you sore!
if you do not continue to go
your sponsor is going to let you know
that she is through with you, Mr. So and So,
and I will also tell you just where you can go,
so you'd better rid yourself real quick
of the inflated ego that keeps you so sick!

Oh yes a lot of lives can be ruined by one person who thinks that gambling will make their life better.
