We have been learning about Winchester Forbes and now we finally get introduced to Carissa, the heroine of this story. We are seeing her as a 4 year old and noting her love for her Papa.

Cuddled by Papa

Carissa was a rambunctious child who hated to sit quietly. Mama scolded her for fidgeting in church. Rather than have her fussing, or worse still, crying, Winchester often took her upon his lap. Once she was in Papa’s lap, this little one was only too happy to sit still and nestle against his chest. Sometimes, the sound of his heartbeat lulled her to sleep and she no longer worried about being scolded.

Little Carissa can sense someting is wrong

Carissa was the baby of the family and the child closest to her Papa. Winchester marveled at the way she seemed to know his every thought. In the evenings the family listened to radio. Papa was not a big smoker. Occasionally, he did enjoy smoking his pipe. Carissa uncannily knew when those times were. Without him saying a word she would jump up and retrieve his pipe and tobacco from the cabinet in the archway adjacent to the living room. She was so tiny she had to climb onto the footstool to do it. Since she received such pleasure from this task, the family did not attempt to assist her.

“See Papa, I am a big girl now. I climbed up. I got your pipe Papa. I got it all by myself.”

“Yes you did baby. You did good!”

Though Winchester did a very good job of hiding his worries from his family he could never fool Carissa.

“Papa why are you so sad?”

“I am not sad baby, See look i’m smilin.”

“Papa you know a smile is not like that it is like this,” Carissa took her tiny fingers and lifted the corners of his mouth to produce a real smile.

“Is that better baby?”

“My Papa is so sad, he has a booboo, right here.” Carissa placed the palm of her hand upon his heart then climbed upon his lap, cuddling her head against his breast and stayed there quietly. No more words were said.

At four years old Carissa was too young to understand the family dynamics but she was told much later that he never wanted to worry Kate because of her delicate condition. He knew she hoped Carissa’s birth would bring him joy in his old age. Of course it did, but even that was not enough.

Don't go away

It was six years since he returned from the Second World War in 1945. Winchester grew even more restless as time went by. The family justified their father’s restlessness on business being bad that final year. Papa had to go out to sea more often. He had to put food on the table and pay the bills. The worry took its toll upon him. His once ever-young-looking face became haggard; wrinkles seemed to appear overnight. His straight jet-black hair thinned out and became grey in no time. The change in him was profound.

One night not long after Carissa’s declaration that her Papa was sad, while Winchester was alone with his thoughts, Carissa climbed upon his lap and started to cry. She looked straight into his eyes and told him she did not want him to go away.

“Papa I don’t want you to go away.”

“Heavens child what are you going on about? I am not going away.”

“Yes Papa you are going away. I don’t want you to go. Stay with me please Papa stay with me.”

“Baby you know I have to go to work. I will go on the boats and come back with the biggest fish you ever saw. Just like always.”

“No Papa don’t go. It is bad, bad, bad. Don’t go Papa. Stay here now.”

“Baby Papa will be back don’t you worry your pretty little head about it. You will see.”

Papa gently rocked his daughter to sleep. It was with a heavy heart, the very next day in 1951 that he enlisted once again to serve Canada’s war effort in the Korean War. Only this time he did not make it home.

Oh no! I'm so sad! Winchester's family needed him. I wish he could have stayed with them.

I think of the many Carissa's who are so loving, innocent and entitled to have their parents to look after them. But life has many twists and turns - siva
