On occasion of the 78 aniversary of Federico García Lorca´s assasination in Granada at the start of the civil war.

Aniversary of a poet´s assasination

On a day like today, on August 19th 1936, Federico García Lorca, a Spanish poet and plyright, was assasinated by the military that had started a civil war against the Spanish republic. He was shot down in between two country spots called Viznar and Attacar in the province of Granada.
He wasn´t a member of any political party, but he was a republican, who aimed to renew the cultural scenery.
His contribution for such a purpose was and is well knwon when he established a drama company called "La Barraca" that toured the whole of the country, performing plays as at that time, illiteracy was way too high.
Some of his most popular plays are about social issues of the time such as sexism and the backward and oppresing teachings of the Catholic Church.
On top of this, Federico García Lorca was an homosexual and this wasn´t of the fascists´s liking. Thus, they took him out of his home in Granada to shoot him down in the countryside.
He made two gross mistakes at the start of the civil war. One is that he shouldn´t have returned from New York where he had gone few months before the war and another, he shouldn´t have gone back to Granada where he was from. He probably thought that he was going to be more protected, because he had his family and friends, but they were precisely some of his friends who reported on him to the authorities.
When he went to NYC, he was already a famed poet and plyright and staying there while the war lasted could have saved him from such terrible and early death, because he was 38 years old.
Federico García Lorca was not only a brilliant poet and playright, but he was also a joyous person and entertainer fond of stitting at the piano to play some of his songs.
