Another Persective on Liberal vs. Conservative

After reading an article on Wikinut where the writer, a right winger, claimed that conservative values are far superior to liberal values, I was prompted to respond by refuting her "facts."

The meaning of "conservative" has changed

Today, the term 'conservative' carries a much different meaning than it did a couple of generations ago. There would be no room in today's Republican Party for people like Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower or even Richard Nixon. They would be summarily rejected as far too liberal for the likes of today's GOP.

Thus we have statements made such as that offered by Wikinut writer LeRain, whose undisguised contempt for liberals pours out of an article that can be read here. In it, she states that "A ludicrous liberal might live next door, but a conservative is not apt to upset the neighborhood applecart with words of contempt over the backyard fence." Such a statement, of course, both assumes and implies that conservatives are well-behaved and polite, while liberals are pushy and crass.

Assumptions galore

She makes other assumptions in her article about liberals as opposed to conservatives that are so far from the truth they cannot go unchallenged.

She writes, for example, that "Conservatives believe peace is achieved through strength; liberals believe it comes from appeasement."

Of course! Of course! Don't you know, dear reader, that Barack Obama sits around in the White House and asks himself "What actions can I take today that will appease our enemies?" These are the kind of statements one can hear every day from pundits on Fox News, where Rudi Guliani recently opined that "Barack Obama wants to bring down America." Yes Rudi, Barack is always asking himself "What actions can I take today that will bring down America?"

The right-wing laundry list

To quote LeRain's article directly:

"Oh, you can hurl insults at me and other conservatives. You can call us every degrading name in the book" (this after she labels liberals 'ludicrous' and 'appeasers'). "You can continue to ignore the facts, but you can't ignore reality marked by:

. persistent unemployment
. sluggish economy
. government dependence
. weakened world image
. skyrocketing national debt
. continuing poverty
. terrorist threats
. loss of freedom"

Let's now refute these spurious claims, one-by-one:

1) After the banksters (the vast majority of them Republicans) engineered the economic meltdown of 2008, unemployment skyrocketed. During the course of the Obama administration, unemployment has steadily decreased to a point that it is now lower than it was at any time during the "conservative" reign of Bush/Cheney. Moreover, from the time Kennedy took office until 2000, Democrats held the White House for twenty years, and Republicans also held it for twenty years. During the Republican years 20 million new jobs were created. During the Democratic years 44 million new jobs were created.

2) The 'sluggish economy' is now growing faster than at any time during the reign of Bush/Cheney

3) Corporations like fossil fuel companies benefit from 'government dependence' far more than anyone else. Subsidies for five big oil companies amount to over 80 billion dollars a year. Welfare for the rich, paid for by the taxpayers, far outstrips welfare for the unfortunate.

4) After 9/11 the good will of other nations was squandered by the right-wing neocons in the Bush administration to the point where we became hated all over the world. Consequently, LeRain's assertion that a 'weakened world image' is the fault of liberals is ludicrous on its face.

5) Skyrocketing national debt is hardly exclusive to liberals. This is a favorite talking point for conservatives, but it is counter to the truth. National debt was increased during the Reagan administration more than all previous administrations combined. That record was surpassed only by the second Bush administration. The Clinton administration was the only post-war administration that actually lowered the national debt and achieved a balanced budget.

5) The 'continuing poverty' LeRain lays at the feet of the liberals is ludicrous. New Deal programs put in place after the Great Depression by 'liberals' laid the groundwork for the uplifting of millions into the middle class, and it was only after these programs were altered or abolished and regulations on corporate and financial sector excesses were curtailed that economic catastrophe ensued, millions were thrown into poverty and the middle class was decimated.

6) Terrorist threats, according to LeRain, are the fault of liberals. Really? I cannot even respond to that, except to say that the terrorist threat that "Osama binLaden determined to strike U.S." should not have been completely ignored by the Bush administration.

7) LeRain blames liberals for 'loss of freedom', which is rather amazing considering the USA Patriot Act was pushed through by a 'conservative' George Bush administration.

Enough said.

You will never get a misinformed conservative to ever believe anything that the liberals do is good

I have always wondered why the Republican Party is termed the "Grand Old Party" - it's not all that old (younger than the Democrats) and what it has done to deserve being called "Grand" is anyone's guess!

Steve, A good commentary. You talked about skyrocketing debt - well she has a short memory and forgets that Bush is the person who left America in debt - a debt it has never recovered from and is unlikely to for at least 25 years and that debt deepens the crisis of capitalism.

Right wingers always accuse the left of the things they themselves are far more guilty of doing.

It's best that I not comment on American politics but I hope the Conservatives are decimated in the Canadian election later this year. It will take years and good management to undo the damage that they have done here. Blessings
