Autumn Is Coming

This is a poem about the season of autumn and the many aspects of the season.

Autumn Is Coming

Even though it is hot right now
there are signs of change in the air.

Some of the leaves are already changing
color from green to yellow.

During the morning there is a
very slight coolness around.

You know it is going to get a bit
chillier as the days get shorter.

There are other changes that
occur as well;
people wear warmer clothing
jackets and heavy sweaters
enjoying a fire and having hot
chocolate.

I remember raking the leaves into a big
pile and then jumping in them over
and over again.

When we were finished raking and jumping
and all the leaves were off the tree
sometimes we would have a bonfire
and listen to crackle of the burning leaves.

Later in the season the ice starts to form
on rivers, streams and puddles and
then while waiting on the school bus
we would try to walk on the crusts of ice
and listen for the crack.

We would then start to notice after the very
last leaves of lemon yellow, watermelon
red, gold and orange leaves were raked
the snow flurries would start to fall and a
new season would be upon us.

That season is Winter and all the fun it has
in store for us.

Thank you for sharing your awesome poetry. I love Autumn/Fall. It's without a doubt my favorite time of year. I like to watch the leaves change colors and the crisp air, football games, candy apples, pumpkin and apple pie. I like everything about the season.

I love the observations you mentioned and the memories you spoke of it made it somehow more personal.

Wonderful! I love Autumn. I love the smell of the leaves in the air and the sounds of them crunching under my feet. I too would jump in the leaves as a kid. How I wish I could go back into that memory! Thank you Mark for sharing this it returned some of my own autumn memories to me!
