Barometer of Success should be How We Benefit Society

Though we are aware that greed is negative, we are too caught up with the desire to accumulate wealth beyond our needs. We need a shift in consciousness to re-balance the way we assess a successful life to lead to a society of harmony.

Get Priorities Right

It is said all that glitters is not gold, so it follows that gold is one the most coveted and held as a barometer of success. We have always looked at gold and those who accumulate wealth as the ultimate towards a successful life. We are enamored of their power and position in society. Nothing succeeds like success is an age-old saying. So even young children are encouraged to emulate the wealthy whatever it takes to reach that threshold except by indulging in illegal activities. But law has lots of grey areas and those who exploit them have a quicker ride towards that goal. In fact, there is a mad scramble as those out of the blocks faster stay ahead with benefits accruing to the wealthy club. Wealth begets wealth with hangers-on of every hue at beck and call. That has been the way of life and the race is getting hotter by the day to accumulate more by hook or crook. Are we not having the wrong priority in life as wealth does not ensure a peaceful life? Of course, lack of basics too does not!

Society Divided

Each country has reached different stages in development and also keeps up with the world in the latest technology trends. The young have similar tastes despite their varying economic capabilities. The borders do not keep in check whatever is the latest fad. Social media reaches the far nook and corner and everyone is aware of what is current. Those with wealth will have access to better products faster but others do catch up with the essentials among them in due course. These realities of the rich to afford the best make wealth an enticing target for all. But does such a lifestyle serve society well? Does it not divide it according to haves and have-nots? Do not the rich have a tendency to enrich themselves at any cost leading to lack of empathy and cohesion?

Capitalism is not Winner Takes All

Capitalism means rewards can be limitless. People are free to pursue legitimate goals to achieve success in their chosen fields. But such work ethic also leads to the exploitation of the vulnerable and they are left to clutch at straws to earn a living while the rich are out of touch with the struggles and aspirations of the majority. People, the world over, have embraced capitalism as other systems have proved tyrannical and inhibit freedom of action and choice of government. However, capitalism has also led us to a road where few embrace wealth for its own sake and how it is accumulated is overlooked. The end justifies the means in the final analysis.

The fissures in society are becoming clearer by the day. The rich are becoming richer at the cost of the most vulnerable. Those similar to them are a hard nut to crack for the rich while the poor are easy prey! That is made clear looking at the plight of the poor. In times of economic crisis it is the poor that make the sacrifice while hardly a dent is made in the lifestyle of the rich. In fact, such times are opportunities for those loaded to stock up their portfolios by buying cheap. And this cycle has been repeating all the while.

Change Perception of Success

Is it not time society moved towards evaluating our success based on how our lives impact the many unfortunate? Why lionize the rich as behind every fortune there is a crime, at least one of taking advantage of the vast majority! As long as we stick to present ways our society will never live in harmony. It is time to self-evaluate our actions and the consequences thereof. The media should also highlight the deleterious effects of the actions of few in stoking the fires of greed to doom societies and divide them down the middle.

Learn from Nature

Things are not alright in the world. It will never be with our present outlook when few feel justified in cornering obscene wealth much beyond their needs, nay even for many generations to come! The key issue is the wrong priorities we attach to life and mislead the future generation into the mad scramble. Is it not time to redefine success by how we touch, uplift, the lives of many? Yes, it is plain common sense but not that common in real life! There should be a shift in our awareness to prick when we accumulate more than we will ever need and the solace we get by making our efforts available to those that are deprived of the basics. Nature gives everything free but we appropriate to ourselves by making unjustifiable laws of possession. The air we breathe is free, so should be water and all essentials. It is our luck that no one has made a law to tax the air and such should be the case for other basic essentials so that society is able to bond as one through sharing the basic needs. It is time we took a step to unwind our laws that go to stoke greed. Let us have the wisdom to make wise choices as a step towards our shift in consciousness away from a dog-eat-dog world – just an expression as they are more accepting of their own as equals! And other species do not hoard!

Thanks Madan. The only way for our long term survival is to think and act on these lines. If not today, tomorrow unless we go overboard before the time turns for the better - siva

And some maniacs may one day could even find ways to charge for Air, if they have their way. The current system across the world places too much emphasis on Money, and this is depriving many of even the bare essentials.

Yes Ptrikha, anything is possible and gets accepted by the majority though it revolts against common sense. Gandhiji said - there is everything to meet our needs but not the greed. Selfish lives are hell for everyone - siva

Thank you Kingwell for your input. Live and let live is hardly adhered to by few. The majority always falls in line but few spoil our days under the sun to cast a pall of gloom. To enrich by depriving others should never be our credo - that is plain sin even if we do not have belief in any religion! It is a negation of the creative process - siva

Important advice for sure. Let us benefit the world rather than banks, and support each other instead of running each other over!

Thank you Phyl. We are meant to support each other - complement than compete. But we are dragged into various groups much against what comes naturally and our conscience - siva

Thank you Rama-ji for your wholehearted encouragement. Everyday we pull each other down, pursue personal agenda, is a day wasted by humanity in the creative process. What is given free is appropriated by few by taking advantage of man-made laws. What they pass on usually proves a burden to their own later as they have not earned them by honest means - siva

Thank you Mariah for your support as always. We have to take that path for a better world for all. Our priorities are not just right - though we realize that, we do not feel the need to change for now, but we have crossed the safety line already. Don't we have a responsibility to generations to come? siva

We do indeed have that responsibility to carry over Siva.. in every way we can.. however small our personal contributions may be to reach that goal.. every little part played forms into a bigger scale.

Thanks again Mariah. Though we are different in some ways our Creator has made us to complement than compete with others in the humongous creative process. He has made sure we come with individual capabilities. Let us count our blessings and rise and prove equal to our task - siva

Yes Utah capitalism is the best of all systems - yet some are able to corner the riches all for themselves especially in poor countries. When they become wealthier at the cost of the poor then it should invite inquiry. Big banks pay big fines when America catches them for wrong doing, but they thumb their noses at the many poor countries that have no clout under similar circumstances - siva

Thank you Johnny for your encouragement - appreciated. Instead of cooperating to benefit all, some are bent upon enriching themselves at others' cost. We need to change our perception as to what is the purpose of life which should be to work as co-creators - siva

That turn in consciousness I eagerly look forward to, Lavenderblu. A poor man dies in peace but rarely a rich It is said wealth should be our slave but it has a tendency to overwhelm us to an extent nothing satisfies our greed and ego - siva

Indeed, if they break the law they must be punished, if not the system is broken and not true Capitalism. That is what is wrong with the PC world, we will no longer hold all the law breakers to the same standards, while others are punished for their sins. A son is not responsible for the sins of his father.

Agreed Utah. Now banks are after compliance painting all account holders with the same brush. Most have only few thousand dollars of transactions every time while very few have millions at a time. Why waste time on everyone and add to their burden? Politics and selective application of law trump the capitalist system of equality and freedom with 99% at the receiving end of injustice - siva

Dear Siva, as you've correctly said, success cannot be measured by how wealthy one is, it is how he uses his wealth to benefit society and help the community which supports him. Capitalism has its evils too as we see in India, where the rich exploit the poor .

Yes dear Subra, capitalism leaves its ugly mark wherever the rich exploits the trusting poor. The latter are easily satisfied while for the former, nothing satisfies them. They keep complaining even when they add billions to their kitty. Their own are tough cookies, so go after a soft target, those who are giving and forgiving! siva
