This is a short poem about an elderly dog called Bella.

Bella's Plea

I'm Bella and I'm twelve years old
I feel my story must be told.
To save another doggy friend
From what could well have been my end.

Sunday just like each new day
Promised lots of hours for me to play.
But shortly after the morning round
I collapsed on a heap and lay on the ground.

Some visitors came on the mid-morning boat
So it wasn't too long before I was afloat.
Kind hands gave me comfort and patted my head
But all those around, thought I was dead.

I was taken by car, and once in the street
I'd rallied a bit, was back on my feet.
My vet he was gentle, caring and kind
Knew what was wrong, no doubt in his mind.

Emergency surgery was the only cure
But carried high risks, my condition was poor.
Antibiotics were needed to combat infection
My vet had to give me these by injection.

I needed a drip, fluid in my vein
The anaesthetic held off the pain.
I came to in stitches, felt rather groggy
General picture – a rather sad doggy.

Stitches came out on the tenth day for me
Then it was back to my swims in the sea.
Antibiotics for several more days
Hidden in food in various ways.

It's thanks to my vet I'm now on the mend
But to all owners this message I send.
To be spayed in old age is really quite risky
Much better done when we're young, fit and frisky.

I've now recovered, have a new lease of life
But the day I took ill caused a great deal of strife.
From emergency boat trip, to calling the vet
It nearly became the end of this pet.

DONT DELAY – SPAY TODAY
