Betika is an unhappy lady. She cares for others but feels that no one cares for her, until things begin to turn around for her.

Betika

Once upon a time there was a young girl by the name of Betika, and she lived on a farm with her step brothers Ben and Bill.
All day long Ben and Bill would sleep and eat, while Betika worked all day and late into the night.
One day Ben and Bill decided to walk into Charming Castle to talk with King Bob and Queen Betty about starting a business. Before leaving the farm they gave orders to Betika.
“You will do all the ironing, washing and sewing. Feed the animals, mow the yard and plow and plant the field and have supper ready for us when we return. You are not to leave the farm. Is that understood?” asked Ben.
“Yes,” Betika answered.
Betika watched as her step brothers walked down the road, until they disappeared from sight.
Betika turned to start her jobs. Stopping suddenly she listened as her horse Bernard whinnied. Going into the barn she went over to pet Bernard on the nose.
“Oh Bernard, I wish I could take you away from here. I know you are just as unhappy as I am,” said Betika, as she stroked Bernard’s sleek brown coat. Bernard snorted and rubbed his head against Betika.
“Bernard, my step brothers will not return until late tonight. We can go for a ride and they will never know that we were gone,” said Betika.

Betika

After saddling Bernard, she and Bernard raced up and down the hills and valleys, the wind rushing against Betika’s face.
Finally Betika decided it was time to return to the farm and start on her chores. As she approached the barn, her heart sank, for standing in front of the barn waiting for her were her step brothers. Riding into the barn she put Bernard into his stall and went back out to her step brothers.
“What was the last thing that we told you not to do?” asked Ben.
“Not to leave the farm,” answered Betika.
“For being a bad girl, you will do extra chores including the chores already assigned to you, and you will not sleep or eat until they are all completed,” said Ben.
“I was only gone for a short time. I cannot possibly get every chore done before dark,” pleaded Betika.
“You should have thought of that before you left the farm, with your horse Bernard,” said Ben, as he and Bill went into the farmhouse.
Betika fixed her step brothers their supper. She did not have the chance to eat anything. Since they were watching everything she did. After eating their full they both lay down and went to sleep.

Betika

Betika went out to the barn. She gave Bernard a good rub down and gave him water and feed. She gathered up the eggs, milked the cow, cleaned the stalls, went out to the field and planted the vegetable seeds.
Taking the milk and eggs into the farmhouse she put them into the refrigerator. Turning around she saw all the chores she needed to do. It was already very late and she had not had anything to eat. Sitting down on the floor she began to cry quietly.
“I wish there was somebody who would come and take me away from all of this,” said Betika, as she sobbed quietly.
Suddenly bright lights of purple, white, yellow, blue, red, pink, and orange swirled and twirled around her.
Standing up Betika looked around in amazement. Right before her eyes appeared a small round woman.
“Who are you?” asked Betika.
“I am your fairy godmother, Myrtle” said Myrtle.
“My fairy godmother!” exclaimed Betika.
“”Yes, that is right,” said Myrtle.
“How did you get here?” asked Betika.
“You asked for me to come here. Now what is it you need?” asked Myrtle.

Betika

“I need all the chores done, things cleaned up, and something to eat and drink,” said Betika.
“It shall be done,” said Myrtle, as she waved her right hand in the air.
When she finished, Betika looked around. Everything was cleaned, all of the animals were fed, and her step brothers had been cleaned up and there was a meal on the table for Betika. Sitting down at the table Betika looked up at her fairy godmother and said,
“Oh thank you so much,”
“Once you finish eating you get to bed. After you have had a good night sleep, you will feel much better tomorrow,” said Myrtle.
After eating her supper, Betika lay down on her bed of hay and fell fast asleep. She did not even know when her fairy godmother kissed her on the forehead and disappeared.
The next morning Betika woke up feeling refreshed and ready for another day. Getting dressed she heard her step brothers outside. Going out to them, she saw they were holding her horse, Bernard.
Racing over to them she tried to grab Bernard, but her step brothers pushed her away, she asked,
“What are you doing with Bernard?”
“Since you cannot stay at home, we are getting rid of the one thing that you can use to get you away from here. We are taking your horse to Charming Castle to sale,” said Ben.

Betika

“No please! Bernard is all that I have. I will stay here. I promise. Please let me keep Bernard!” sobbed Betika.
Pushing Betika out of the way, Ben and Bill walked Bernard down the road and out of sight, as Betika sat on the ground crying.
“I wish to save Bernard and have him come back to me healthy and happy,” whispered Betika.
A swirl of colored lights of pink, orange, yellow, white, blue, red and purple swirled around Betika. She saw once again her fairy godmother Myrtle standing before her.
“I do not like to see you so unhappy. Now tell me all about it,” said Myrtle, as she helped Betika to her feet and wiped away her tears.
“Myrtle, my step brothers have taken my horse Bernard to Charming Castle. I have had Bernard for several months. He wandered onto our farm hurt and hungry. He is all I have here to bring some joy into my life, and now my step brothers have taken him away from me,” said Betika.
“Then we need to do something about this. We are going to go get your horse back,” said Myrtle.
Betika watched as Myrtle brought out a white chicken and the black and white cow.
Waving her hand she repaired a broken wagon and colored it red. Waving her hand she changed a white chicken into the driver for the wagon. Next she changed the black and white cow into a fast moving cow, by giving the cow’s tail extra power to move fast down the road.

Betika

Betika was magically changed into a beautiful dress, shoes and her hair was put up in a pretty pink bow.
“Now my dear you get into the wagon and go straight to Charming Castle. Your horse Bernard needs you right now. Be brave! I will be close by,” said Myrtle, as she helped Betika into the red wagon.
The chicken driver twirled the cow’s tail around and around without hurting the cow, and let go of it and as the tail twirled Betika was taken down the road at a fast pace to Charming Castle.
Betika saw her step brothers talking with King Bob and Queen Betty. She saw her beloved horse Bernard standing behind Ben. Racing up to King Bob and Queen Betty, Betika began to plead with them.
“Please sir! This is my horse Bernard. I have cared for him for several months. My step brothers have taken him away from me. He is all that I have. Please may I have him back?” Betika pleaded.
King Bob turned to Ben and Bill and asked,
“Is what this young lady telling me true?” asked King Bob.
“We have never seen her before in our lives,” said Bill, as Ben nodded in agreement.
“Sir, please allow me to prove that Bernard is my horse. The three of us will move away and call Bernard to us one at a time. Whomever Bernard goes to then that person is the rightful owner,” said Betika.

Betika

“That sounds fair enough,” said Queen Betty.
“This is just a waste of time,” said Ben.
“Are you afraid that she will prove the horse to be her horse?” asked King Bob.
Bill nor Ben did not answer the question and stood silently looking down at the ground.
“All right, all of you go to the other side of the street,” ordered Queen Betty.
Once they had all crossed the street, they turned around and Bill was the first one to call to Bernard.
“Bernard! Come here at once! Do not make me come after you!” yelled Ben.
Bernard looked across the street at the three people. He did not make any move and completely ignored Ben. Ben was infuriated. Stamping his foot on the ground he turned around, giving up.
Bill was the next one to call to Bernard. Clearing his throat, he called out,
“Bernard! Come here boy! Remember I gave you some food one day. Come on Boy! You remember me,” called Bill.
Bernard looked at Bill and completely ignored him too and went back to nibbling on the grass nearby.
“It is my turn,” said Betika as she stepped forward.

Betika

“Bernard, come here, come here honey,” called Betika standing quietly. She and Bernard looked at each other. Bernard snorted and moved his head up and down. Prancing over to Betika, he pressed his nose against her, while she petted his head.
“Oh Bernard, I love you! You are such a good horse,” Betika said, as she hugged Bernard’s neck and kissed him on the nose.
With the kiss of love, Bernard was changed from being a horse and back into the Prince he once was. King Bob and Queen Betty recognized their son and came over to him.
“Son, you are all right! We had no idea that you had been changed into a horse,” said King Bob.
“Oh son, we have missed you so much,” said Queen Betty, as she gave him a big hug.
“This young lady Betika has cared for me for many months. Even when she was at her lowest, she was always kind hearted to me and the other animals in the barn. I can now tell her that I love her and would like for her to become my wife,” said Prince Bernard.
Betika took hold of Bernard’s hand and they stood together as Bill and Ben looked on, not knowing what to say or do.
“What would you have me do with these two?” asked King Bob.
“Allow them to return to their farm. They must care for the animals there, treat them with kindness, do all the chores and plant the field. We will check on them every so often to make sure they are doing as they should. Once they return to their farm, the chicken will return back to her original self and the cow’s tail will no longer give it special power,” said Betika.

Betika

“Off with you both! If it was up to me, I would deal out a harsher punishment for you both, now away with you!” ordered King Bob.
“Thank you! Thank you!” they both said, as they hurried to the red wagon and drove away as fast as the black and white cow would take them.
King Bob and Queen Betty held hands and walked towards Charming Castle. Behind them was their son Prince Bernard and his soon to be bride Betika to live happily ever after in Charming Castle.
