Chloe and Sophie had been friends since they were babies, until Mike came along. Read on to find out what happened

Betrayed

Chloe and Sophie lived right near to each other, and went to the same school for all of their lives. They were both only children, and they grew up together more like sisters than friends. Their families were friendly too, sometimes they fought like sisters do, and sometimes they had fun, but nothing kept them apart for long because they loved and trusted each other.

Sophie was the vivacious and bubbly one, who was always the centre of attention, and loved a party. She had blonde hair, and big eyes, and was very beautiful. Chloe was quieter, she had always been more studious, she wanted to do well in life, so she worked hard, and got a degree, and took up a career in Law.

Sophie had always had lots of boyfriends, she was very popular, the life and soul of any party, and men were queuing up to take her out. She got a job in a ladies boutique, fashion was always of great interest to her, and working there gave her the pick of anything new when it came into stock.

Chloe worked long hours.

Chloe wanted to rise up in her chosen profession, so as well as working hard during the day, she also took it home with her. Most evenings she sat on the computer, there was always plenty of paper work to be done.

She didn't really have time for boyfriends or parties, she just wanted to make something of her career, and then later maybe she could think of settling down. But sometimes fate decides to strike in the most unusual way, and of all people , Mike at the office developed a thing for her.

She couldn't deny he was handsome, with his black curly hair, cut short at the sides, and those dark eyes, he was really hard to ignore, and before she knew it, they were working together in the evenings, and then it was inevitable that they fell in love, and became a couple.

Sophie was delighted for her, and she remarked about it.
" You are a dark horse Chloe, finding yourself a man at the office, but I am really happy for you."
" I didn't find him, he found me, but I am so glad he did, once I get these preliminary exams out of the way, we are going out to have some fun.
" So you should." said Sophie approvingly. Bring him to one of my parties, and you can both let your hair down."

One year later

So just to show they were not all about work, Chloe and Mike went to some of Sophie's parties, they were noisy and boozy, as parties are, but they had fun, and made more new friends.

Chloe finally sat her first exam at the Law Company, and when she passed it with high marks, she couldn't wait to tell Mike, it was her first step up, she had worked so hard, and maybe they could even think about getting engaged, although she would wait for him to suggest it. Mike had been a huge help when she was studying, he had already taken that step upwards, and his support had bound them even closer, and she now felt she could take the world on.

Something changed

Chloe couldn't be sure when she first noticed something was wrong, but Mike had said now she had passed her first exam they could ease off doing all that extra work at home, and it made sense. She was still only 23, and had her whole life ahead of her, but his visits to her flat became less frequent.

She soon got bored of watching TV, but he never seemed to be available to go out with her, and then one day he dropped the bombshell.
" There is no easy way to say this Chloe, but I am with Sophie now."

Chloe wanted to shout and scream, and beat him with her fists, she had been betrayed not only by her closest friend, but also the man she loved!, But all she did was wish them both well, and sent him on his way. She was not giving either of them the satisfaction of seeing her tears, and knowing they had broken her heart.

Instead she threw herself wholeheartedly into her work, and was then offered a transfer to America for 6 months. The time away did her good, and when she returned, it was to hear they were now married, and Sophie was expecting their first child.

She wondered why she had returned

Even after a year the pain still lingered inside her, all her trust for men and women had gone. Training to be a solicitor had made her realise just how cruel people can be to one another. She continued to work hard, this time she was alone in her flat on her computer.

One night Mike arrived, he wanted to talk, he needed to explain, his words cut into her like the sharpest knife.

"I still love you, I always have, Sophie is just a good time girl you know, she only cares about herself. I only married her because she's pregnant, but I can't stay with her she's too self centred."

This time Chloe didn't keep quiet, she said the words that had remained dormant inside her for a long time.
" Well I don't love you Mike, go back to your wife, you deserve each other!"

And after she had shut the door on him she realised with great surprise it was true, she could move on . Now her mobile was ringing, now who could that be.?
" Hi honey it's Brad, I just landed in London, and was wondering if you could show me around?."

Her mood lightened immediately. Brad had been in the Law company in America, he had made her laugh, and they had fun together, she had even confided in him about being dumped for her best friend, and his words had been so comforting.

" Anyone who dumps you needs a new pair of glasses, not only are you a very clever woman, you are also a very beautiful one, way out of my league of course."
" Oh Brad I am so pleased to see you, get a taxi to my flat, you know the address, and we can plan our outings."
Then she added.
" They got married you know, and he came to try and get me back, they aren't happy."

Brad swallowed at the end of the phone, wondering if he had made this trip for nothing.
" Did it upset you seeing him?" what he wanted to say was, surely now you know him for what he is, but she had to find out for herself, and he had to play his cards just right.
" No not at all, they both betrayed me, one day I may be able to forgive them, I am working on it."

Suddenly her life seemed to have more of a purpose than just work, she felt like she had just shed a very heavy burden and it felt good. Brad with his cheery smile, and zany sense of humour, had shown her not to take life too seriously. She might even return to America with him , there was a place for her, but she was glad she had come back and put her demons to rest. Now she could finally move on.

Good Luck!!! I know what I would have done if he played me that way and yep, being the intellectual person I am, I would have vowed there would be no other and kept it.
Not interested in men, they are all foxes with tails in front who play on until the next one comes along from whichever side, past, present or future.
None of them prove me wrong, but on the contrary side with what I always believe and NOT one to this day, I mean it.
The day I find that One person, it will be a public declaration that is the one.

Any way, I am married and same boat as Sophie with child and a philandering husband who is not Mike. That is why we live apart...

Love the Peter Pan clip you used at the end. Was confused whether this was an original piece or a news story you were reporting. As original, good writing. It reads like a 20/20 mystery, which is not a bad thing. ;)
