Books, My Childhood, and My parents

This is the story of my childhood, books available at school, and the teacher and my father's interaction.

My liking for books

I have always had a love affair going with reading. To say that I was a bookworm growing up is a vast understatement. Of course part of that could have been because we didn't have a television in my early years...not till I was about 15, in fact. But in any case, I could usually be found with a book in my hand.

Trouble?

It got me in trouble sometimes, in fact my father thought I was insane, but he also didn't want to spend a lot of time trying to knock the books out of my hand so he usually just let me read. I remember in the second or third grade, we had a program in our class. So often, and think it was every six weeks, we got a form that allowed us to order books to read outside of the classroom. Now these were not assignments, they were for fun. I think, actually, they were part of a program to try and encourage children to read.

The teacher and my parents

The very first time I got to order, I remember taking the form home and telling my mother which books I wanted. There were quite a few of them. I think they came to about 10 or 15 U. S. dollars (and that was in the 1960's and I think each book was like a quarter) Quite a few books indeed.

I am not sure how it happened, but I can see almost like it was yesterday, my father being in a meeting with the teacher. She wanted to know if this money in her hand was the one time payment on all the books on this particular list that I had picked out or if he had meant for this to be the budget for the year. My father looked confused and said "let him have the books that he wants".

One of my best memories of my father....he for once backed me up on something. Didn't happen a lot. I must have read the books too, because I don't remember any beatings for "wasting money".

I too loved to read as a child but there were few books available. I did read everything that I could get my hands on and I might add that my parents encouraged it. Loved your post. Blessings.

Books should never be kept away from those who want to read.
