Why spend money in meaningless best selling novels when there are other books that aren't best sellers, but they can be found in any good book shop and they can be as compelling as a latest fashionable one?

Books to be taken on a holiday

At this time of the year, everyone searches for books to read while on holiday. Some of them will pick the latest best sellers whether they are thick novels or brainy essays. Whatever they are chosen will be enjoyable while they lay in the sun. Fair enough. However, I think since there are way too many books to choose from, it is important to choose well.
Books are to let us have a pleasing time as we read them, but they are also to teach us something worth knowing.
It is right to wish to read the newest novel, but there are also books that aren't best sellers, or they perhaps are, because we can always find them in bookshops, especially if these are good bookshops that cater for all likes. I'm thinking of the classic ones and especially historic ones.
One may think that one went to primary and secondary school to then reach to university college and that, therefore, one had to read and to study a lot of history, but are we sure to know history well? History is a vast theme and at the very best we heard of past issues under our teachers' point of view. They told us about certain issues that they thought we had to know about them and they repeated them over and over again and whatever the case it was always their biased point of view.
It is time to dust off history books to start reading them again without no one interfering in our readings to tell us whether this was right or not. We have to find out for ourselves after a good reading and thought.
Many historical issues are as compelling as the latest best seller novel.
Why have I decided to tackle on the The Conquest of Mexico? It's a book of over one thousand pages and, therefore, to keep me well entertained for several months. I decided to tackle its reading, because I'm fed up with the lies I've been told when I was a student. Now, I want to know the truth, reading this account by the one who was in such a conquest.
The Bible is another book that I think should be read and reread at all times. The Bible isn't a book of prayers, but The Bible, especially its New Testament, is the book that sets the principles of our Christian civilization very clearly. It sets the principles for every good Christian whether one is a practising Catholic or not. It is a book to be read in solitude and to think about it.
There are many books that we could take on our Summer holiday, choosing a specific historical one written and well researched by a non biased historian and The Bible should be enough to keep us well entertained and to give us a matter of thought, because we may be going on holidays, but our brain does not. It should not.

Vicky, thanks for sharing such a great article. I love all kinds of books. My house is filled with them. Believe it or not some of them I haven't read yet. If I start right now maybe I would catch up at least a little bit. When I go to a garage sale and there's a good book I buy it for between 50 cents and a dollar. The price is always reasonable and sometimes they are best sellers. Then again they might just be a book I'm interested in but the price is always good. I love the fact that writers love to read. We all have so much in common. My Nook is filled with books too.

I'm a good read since childhood, although, on these days, the Internet is taking some of my spare for reading some pages of a book. However and no matter how I love reading, I think we should never buy many books than we're able to read. Avoid compulsive buys of books no matter how cheaply they can be. Books aren't like clothes or any other commodity for the house. Books are to be read and enjoyed.

Vicky, I love all my books. Hopefully when my life settles down a little bit I will catch up on all my reading. I spend so much time writing but that is something else I love to do.
