Former 1500 meters world record holder tells CNN’s ‘African Voices’ how he’s nurturing Tanzania’s next team for the Olympic games

This week on CNN’s ‘African Voices’, former Tanzanian 1500 meters world record holder, Filbert Bayi, aptly illustrates how he’s now working hard to help Tanzania's next generation succeed in both athletics and academics.

Bayi, who set a world record by outrunning his East African compatriots and others in the 1974 Commonwealth Games, started the Filbert Bayi Schools in Dar Es Salaam in 1996, where he has not only dedicated his life to leaving a lasting impact but also developing athletic and educational talents within the youth.

‘African Voices’ takes viewers through Bayi’s inspiring journey from a small farm in northern Tanzania, to the Olympic stage, and his ambitious plans to educate and develop Tanzania’s next generation.

Bayi is also Secretary-General of the Tanzania Olympic committee.

He has developed a clever strategy to ensure success for his country's young Olympic hopefuls.

“At the moment we have 15 athletes and we divide those athletes into different events from 400 meters to 1500 meters and long jump and triple jump,” Bayi told the programme.

According to the former world record holder, it has been a lifelong dream to create schools where youth sports talents can be developed and young minds educated.

In addition to teaching, he also runs a foundation dedicated to educating the community on the dangers inherent in drug-taking and HIV-Aids... and offering support to those impacted by their effects.

The interview on ‘African Voices’ airs on Friday May 16th at 10:30am with a repeat broadcast on Saturday 17:30pm, Sunday 05:30am, 11:00am & 20:30, Monday 04.30am & 12:30 and Tuesday at 07:30.
