A poetic observation of coffee farmers in El Salvador in the Lago de Coatepeque region. Travel observations and experiences of El Salvador in 2013, shared through the fusion of poetry and photography.

Forgiveness

Her lulling winds
agitate
understory,
and trash...
tumbled upon
ground
now coveted
for freight
which birthed
this obscenity —
hard labor,
hands torn,
scorned,
never enough, as
gazing eyes
retreat into
the dance
and response
of fanciful figurines,
creations of
whites
and blue,
while brow
or spade
furrow,
and furious fingers
sully Her complexion.
Without end
they unfold;
a red cherry,
behold,
work
only forgiven
by Mother.

Sacrifice

Moreno skin
and warm hearts
elevate Her,
like children
in the garden;
arms stretched,
a breath,
both theirs
and that
from far away
forming soapy-string
bubbles.
Here,
a placidity envelops
haggard,
intimidating
treasures.
Verdant
She stands;
She serves,
without demands,
one, more than
the other.

Selflessness

Tangled hands
give rise
to aromatic creations —
sensations,
emanating
from the pains,
and gain
of the bean.
Hope wanes,
yet one
proclaims Gloria a Dios!
as a breeze
lifts,
and drifts
their troubles
across distant blues.
Faithful lago,
Coatepeque,
grand disk of
azul,
sleeping caldron of
the Savior,
catchment, garnished
in growth,
most alluring of
eroded,
earthly
potholes,
Why offer your bountiful vista,
when from crop
to barista,
one covey
never greets
the other?

Service

Long walks,
heavy loads.
They incline
through fumes,
by feel,
in rhyme,
their whistles,
and tenderness,
these producers,
burden
upon burden;
these providers,
hand
upon head;
they toil in delight,
harvesting,
as those before them
with machete,
as appendage,
binder
and reminder.
For to them it just is;
to others, it could be,
as they ache,
they give
and they take,
all for another.
