Can anyone be Evil?

There are many people in our prisons who have committed terrible crimes, and most of them seem to have come from a disturbed background. But what about the ones who have no clear reason for it? Read on to find out more.

Can anyone be Evil?

How many times when listening to the news, or reading a newspaper have I exclaimed in horror when listening to the terrible deeds that have been done by murderers ? It is beyone the realms of comprehension to think of someone beating, starving and abusing their victims, some of them children, and then finally depriving them of life in the most horrific way.

Even worse, sometimes a child may be missing, and their body is never found. Their parents spend the rest of their lives hoping the perpetrator will let them know where the body is, so they can bury their child, and get some sort of closure. But more often than not, they have to live out ther days with their souls in torment, because the guilty person refuses to tell anyone.

Do they have no conscience?

It would seem that people who commit such evil crimes, and then refuse to co-operate do not have a conscience, so it won't bother them. Maybe they feel it gives them some sort of power over the families of their victim, to withhold the one piece of information that could go some way towards helping to ease their pain.

But I often wonder what prompts people to kill?. Crimes of passion are committed in the heat of the moment, some people just cannot control their temper and violent tendencies.

But being a mother, no matter how upset and angry my children may have made me at times, there was never a thought of extinguishing their little lives, and when I hear of a mother who has murdered her own babies, I feel not only pain for those little mites who never got to really experience life, but I also feel very sorry for the mother, because I feel any one who can do this to their own child must have very serious mental problems , and need help. To murder something that was born out of your own body is unnatural, and is surely a serious cry for help?

So why do they do it?

Often there is a reason why people abuse and kill others. Many of them come from their own home environment of abuse and neglect, and one could argue that it's "normal" for them to behave like that because that is all they have ever known in their own lives.

This is where psychiatrists and psychologists come into it. We cannot excuse behaviour like this, it is unacceptable in society, But with their help, some of these people can reform and change their attitude in life. These are people who have never been helped before , or shown any sort of compassion, but they are sick people, and they need to be shown the error of their ways, and given a chance to rebuild their life, even if they cannot be allowed back into society they can still lead a better life in prison.

It must be very hard for familes of their victims to forgive them , even if they do have mental problems. To be deprived of someone you love so dearly, the only satisfaction from that is to hope that person is locked away where they can no longer hurt anyone else.

But what about people who appear to be evil for no reason?

If you can put an excuse to why somebody is evil, you can reconcile it in your mind. It doesn't make it right, but you can understand it. But what if that person comes from a loving family, has never been abused in any way, and is surrounded by everything in life they could possibly want?

I decided to make that the theme for my latest book. I have tried to create a character who is more evil than anyone can imagine. It's easier to write about feisty heroines, who get their man, and do heroic deeds, but this time I wanted the story to be as dark as the character.

My evil woman has no excuse for her behaviour. She is loved by her parents, with a happy homelife. So where has this seed of evil and hatred planted inside her come from? Or has she just been born evil, without a conscience, and completely uncaring? Is the selfishness of her nature the reason she goes through life doing exactly as she wants, leaving a trail of misery and destruction behind her?.

So many questions, and can I ever know the answers? Writing this book certainly gave me much to think about. Everyone of us has good and bad inside us, but if we come from the right environment , and learn the correct values in life, we can curb the bad side of our nature.

When having an argument, it's easy to let that other side of us come through, and say something you didn't really mean. I have certainly done it at times in my life. But I do have a conscience, and I would never purposely hurt anyone, so by saying sorry and meaning it, hopefully I am in control of my bad side.

Whether evil people do not have that control, or don't want to have it is debatable, and if they are sick and mentally disturbed because of other people's actions towards them, I am truly sorry for them.I had the benefit of a loving family, my parents were good responsible people, and for that I am truly grateful.

Page from my own book of life....
Society makes them who they are because they refuse to understand their point of view. If a person were to be constantly badgered wwith negativity, they can get hardened by the injustice meted on them and create criminals out of good people.
Many good people take to crime due to pressures of society wih well meaning advice which could be demeaning their own very good to the extent that they break themselves till the heal in negativity which remains until someone with genuine interest and concern comes up takes them in and finally shows them they care. and they breakdown and cry till they wake up totally changed and unrecognisable to the people who once knew them for the way they were.

dear Carol . This is a heady subject you have taken on . Yes , I believe there is a battle going on for the lives of all humans . Good against evil , and the enemy of our souls does not dress up in a hideous costume or fly on a broomstick , he is much more subtle than that . He ( the Devil ) puts wrong thoughts into people's minds , and then aids them to do wrong . Once on the slippery path , it is easier to slide down further until they are hooked . But , thankfully , there is the Good Lord to rescue us from Satan's grip , if we call on Him in our time of need .
God bless you dear friend .

Thank you so much Stella, we have to call on our lord when we are tempted to be bad, but some people don't look to him for help.

I believe that each person has the capacity to do good. Our actions are driven by our values and what we perceive is right. Unfortunately, some may not have the capacity to control themselves.

Thank you jpmc, I do agree with that, but are some people not willing to control themselves because of their own selfish needs?

Sometimes I feel evil is in the mind and what is good for one may be evil for another. After all even Lucifer was a great lover of God.

Nice post, Carol. I think society makes some evil as they cannot accept the injustices and hypocrisy like the majority does. Some are too sensitive to get back to level ground. For me, evil thoughts are nipped in the bud and I succeed in that more and more. Forgiving is the easy part but not forgetting as backstabbing replays in our minds and, maybe, for a purpose - to be on guard and not make the same mistakes.
We are after all human and some just cannot take it anymore and feel totally lost. I feel our priorities are haywire as we allow the greedy to run away with the spoils - siva
