Can you Imagine?

A poem that will hopefully get you thinking about life

Can you Imagine?

Can you imagine just living alone?
Throughout the dark nights when winter winds moan
With no-one to talk tom no one to care,
No telephone, radio, food cupboards bare?

Can you imagine just living alone?
Throughout the dark nights when winter winds moan
With several species to feed and to bed
When you’ve got ‘flu and wish you were dead?

Can you imagine, scanning each day
Vacant horizons lest a boat head your way
Realising by dusk as day draws to an end
Another day’s passed with no human friend.

Can you imagine getting down on all fours?
With the wind ripping roofs off and blowing open doors
Crawling along lest you’re blown to the sea
Just to feed animals: Would it be you or me?

Time to take stock, Kath, the reason you’re there
Is because previous owners just didn’t care
You never say no, turn nothing away
But where are your friends at the end of the day?

The feeds bills are enormous, vet’s bills are high
They cannot be met by just you and I
The few loyal supporters already do much
But too many members are way out of touch.

There’s no-one I know who’d be in your place
And take on daily the workload you face
Or can really imagine what you’ve gone through
I know that this winter’s been so hard on you.
