We are in the grip of a heatwave, which in England is rare. We need to take care of ourselves, our children, and all our furry friends. Read on to find out more.

Caring for Ourselves and our Pets in Hot Weather

It is unusual for extremely hot temperatures in England, especially in June, but this is what is happening right now. As a nation we are not equipped for it, most houses do not have air conditioning, This week everyone has rushed to buy electric fans, and the shops are selling out of them.

Windows and doors are left open all day, curtains and blinds are drawn to try and keep the extreme heat of the sun out, and if you go out, then they have to be closed, and the house is unbearably hot when you return.

There are some things we can do to make our life more comfortable, and for our animals, with their fur coats, so here are some of my ideas.

Our Babies and Children

I don't think it's a good idea to take children and babies out for a long time in extreme heat unless you can find somewhere shady to walk them. Sun block should always be put on them, they should wear a sun hat, and water to drink must always be available, as dehydration in hot weather can make them feel very ill.

If they got out in the car, use air conditioning to keep them cool, and don't put tight clothes on them, they need loose clothing , preferably made from cotton. If they lose their appetite temporarily, just make sure they drink plenty of fluid to compensate.

Our Furry friends

Animals have their own way of coping with hot weather, their instinct is strong, and they have fur coats, which make it worse. My experience of dogs and cats is they find a shady spot and sleep for most of the day. They become a bit more alert in the evening, but sun can also diminish their appetites.

When I had my dog, I always walked him in early morning, or evening when the sun was not so strong. Living by the sea, I was able to choose a shady glen ,or the beach so he could go in the water and cool off.

Although it is notoriously difficult to get cats to drink water, a bowl of it should always be made available, and also for dogs. They sweat by panting. Nobody should leave their dog in a car, not even for a minute in hot weather, it is the most gruesome way for it to die. If you have to take your dog out with you, make sure the air conditioning is onwith [/you.

Animals in Cages

Caged animals such as rabbits, hamsters etc also find it hard to cope with heat. Never leave their cage outside in the extreme heat, put yourself in their place, would you like it? Move their cage into the shade, give them water, anything that will make them feel more comfortable.

They are vulnerable i innocent little animals, our family pets, and we must take proper care of them, and never go out for a long period and leave them anywhere that is hot, including the house. Rooms can be made cooler, either with a fan, or by drawing the curtains or blinds, just a little bit of extra thought can make a huge difference.

What about Us?

We also need to take care of ourselves. The very young and the elderly are supposed to be the ones at most risk from the sun, but I believe that anyone of any age can be affected if we don't take care.

Like babies, we need sun block to be applied at regular intervals all day. Sun glasses help to protect our eyes. Loose clothing, and we must avoid sitting in one place for a long time. Sun bathing is very dangerous, walking about is safer. A sun hat is essential, plenty of water to drink, and moving slowly, never rush about in extreme heat.

Melanoma, or skin cancer can be the result of allowing our skin to be damaged by the sun, and in some cases, it can result in death. But the sun is a wonderful tonic, we just need to treat it with respect, and with a few sensible precautions we can all enjoy it without any lasting ill effects.

Carol, great article. It's been so hot here in Ohio. 93 almost every day. It's too hot for me. The temps are just now starting to drop but they are supposed to go right back up. They said we broke records this year so far. The heat actually makes me sick when it gets too hot. Congratulations on the gold star.

Thanks for the star Peter, and for your comment Nancy. Too many pets are dying needlessly, and children are being put at risk. So I decided to highlight it, it's just common sense really, nobody wants anyone or any animal to suffer when precautions can be taken.

Carol, I totally agree with you and I hope people read your article and understand just how distressing the heat can be. Here in Ohio people have been breaking the car windows to get dogs to safety. It's seems extreme but the animals are in danger.
