I spent last week at our holiday home in Suffolk, and took the opportunity to go out book promoting. Read on to find out how I got on.

We arrived late on Friday night, as we have found the best way to avoid the traffic at the Dartford Toll crossing is to wait until everyone has gone home. We bring our two cats and the dog with us, so after unloading the car, we set the alarm for early and went to bed.

Thetford was my first venue, apart from me there were several jewellery stalls, a home made cuddly toy stall, and someone was selling pot plant holders. There was also a stall selling home made soaps.

I sold lots of books that day, it seemed everyone was interested in the fact I had travelled from Kent to join them. A lady approached me about doing a talk at her local club at a later date, so I went home feeling very satisfied that night.

Sunday

On Sunday I went to a farmers market at Thurston. it's always harder to sell books when food is on offer, most people like to buy locally produced fresh food, but nevertheless I made some sales.

What was more pleasing was the lady from Thurston Library invited me to return in December, and do a reading, and also sell signed copies of my books. It seems everyone wants to hear about how my son Phil inspired me to write my first book

Monday to Friday

The weather was beautiful sunny every day, so we visited the Norfolk coast, taking Leo with us. When we walked around Sheringham, I was struck by how loved dogs are in this town. There were water bowls everywhere, he was invited inside shops with us, and one man even gave him a treat after asking our permission.

One day was a bit cloudy, so we went for a swim at the local swimming pool at Stowmarket, we have membership cards, so we get it at a cheaper rate. Before we knew it, the weekend had arrived again, and there were more events for me to participate in.

Stonham Barns

Stonham Barns is an outlet set in the middle of the countryside. There is a holiday park there too, so people are constantly walking about. It was a lovely day, so being outside was good, and it's up to us to make our table as interesting as possible, so people walking past are interested enough to stop and look.

On this day it was fairly quiet, but I still managed to make some sales, and with this venue you can't lose, as it's completely free, they provide everything including a cup of tea or coffee. All you need to bring is a chair, which you hope you will be too busy to sit in.

Cockfield Fete

On Sunday we went to the village of Cockfield, the craft fair was set in the grounds of a most beautiful house. But it wasn't really about the Craft Fair, it was the experience of being there, and watching the children. They had dancing, Punch and Judy shows, fancy dress competitions, and the locals had done themselves proud making home made cakes and pickles, and hot dogs and burgers were cooked nearby, with an aroma rising that was too hard to resist.

The lady from the local WI came over to chat to me, another important contact was made, and I have been invited to do a talk next year. Sometimes new contacts are more important than sales, as they can lead on to greater things later. I went home at the end of the day feeling content with what I had achieved that week.

Upon Reflection

I have found going out and meeting the public is a great way of raising my profile as an author. Lots of new contacts and friendships have been made, and every week the likes on my facebook page go up.

But a word of caution to anyone starting out on this route. Except at Christmas time, you won't sell masses of books, but you will meet lots of people, and experience new possibilities. Take anything that is offered. I have now become a speaker, and for someone as shy as me, it's quite a step forward. I count myself lucky to be doing a job I love, and I will continue to work hard at it. It's not just about the writing, it's also about making people aware of you. Good luck to any budding authors out there, keep at it, and one day you will reap the rewards. I still have mountains to climb, but I am up for it! GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL! XXX

Glad you are getting out there! I have not been doing much in person promoting. I'm doing a lot with my online presence in potential pursuit of setting my media presence as a working portfolio for ghost marketing. One would think I just play online all day. Would that there true!! Keep up the happy travels, great connections, and sales!!

Not only do I get out there, I also have a lot of online work to do, booking, promoting, emails back and forth, it takes hours, but when I get rich, ahah, I will pay someone else to do that part of it. Thanks Phyl and good luck with your work.
