Last week was a busy and diverse one for me. Read on to find out more about it.

Carol' Blog from around Kent

As a travelling author, I usually venture between Suffolk and Kent. I enjoy meeting people, and am up for the challenge of selling books at a time when there are more people than ever who don't have time to read, or prefer to buy their books in charity shops, or borrow them from the library.

I can see the logic of doing this, so if I can sell some of my books on my travels, it's very pleasing. There are a certain section of the community that like hardback books, and as they are personally signed for them, they will keep it, and I hope read it more than once. Also a signed book makes a great present for someone else, if you know what their taste is.

Because I mostly go to Craft fairs on my own, I usually veer towards venues that have parking right outside, even with my books in a suitcase on wheels, they are heavy, and I am not getting any younger, and the bag that contains the very important supatickets, is also very heavy.

On Tuesday I had been invited to the Tudor Marriott Hotel at Maidstone. I was a guest speaker at the Maidstone Tangent Club. This was arranged through a lady who organises craft fairs, she sent their representative to speak to me the last time I was trading there, which was great.

I was treated like Royalty that evening. I sat on the top table with ladies who were so friendly, I felt I had known them forever. We had a delicious meal and a glass of wine, and by the time I came to give my talk, all my nerves had evaporated.

My talk is entitled INSPIRATION, and it's all about how my son inspired me to write my first book. It was a heartwarming feeling afterwards to hear that they had enjoyed the talk, and I was pleased to make sales also. Now wonder that book was my top seller that day.

Saturday

I had heard how busy the Fair at Dover Town Hall could be, so I was undaunted by the cost of the car park, which was £8.25 for the day, and also the flight of stairs I had to climb to get into the building.

I arrived early and set up, there was a lady behind me selling home made chocolate, so I had to have strong will power to resist it all day. We started the day off well, I met some very interesting people, and made some good sales. But in different areas, readers choices change. My top selling book that day was EVIL WOMAN. It seems , even after three years, Sadie Morton Brown has the power to fear and enthrall the reader in equal measure.

This is of course down to the excellent cover designs created by my publisher. They say never judge a book by its cover, but in this case, please do! It always fascinates me the number of men who buy this book. Some profess that they don't normally read, but Sadie's dark mysterious eyes are captured so well on the cover, that some just can't resist her.

Her escapades are beyond belief, her ability to shock makes one wonder what she could possibly do next that is any worse than the time before. But of course, Sadie does not really exist, it's pure imagination and escapism, which I really enjoy. In fact Sadie has worked really well for me, as my readers insisted they wanted to know what she did next, so in June last year, Evil Woman ...Takes revenge was published, and most people now buy both books together.

Sunday

On Sunday I was at the Carano Fair at Ashford. It's a very social event, I know lots of the stall holders, and they are all fine craftspeople. it's not a market, everything is lovingly made by the folks who sell it.

I made sales, and I also chatted, and did some groundwork towards my next talk. I have found being a Talker, not only challenges the natural shyness that has always plagued me, but also works well in selling my books. I try to make my talks interesting and amusing, and to create rapport with the audience, and I hope as I progress that I can make them even better in the future. Nobody has to buy a book at the end, but if they do, it means I have achieved my aim.

Now I am starting to publicise my new book, entitled The Power of Love, which will be published in September. It is set in the 1960s, a time I have fond memories of. The story is about a young girl, who gets pregnant, her boyfriend doesn't know because he has been conscripted, and she is sent away to avoid disgrace, but then decides to keep her baby.

Laura Clark is a symbol of women at that time, trying to prove her independence with everything stacked against her. When her baby is born, because of ignorance at that time, she is blamed for his autism, and she vows to make his life as good as it can be. When she finally meets up with his father, not only does she have to tell him he is a father, but also that his son is autistic, and she has no idea whether he will be able to cope with that knowledge.

I used my knowledge of autism with my own son to create the character of Matthew, I am so glad that autism is widely recognised now, it's a complex and baffling condition both for the sufferer and their family, but strides forward are being made every day. And with programmes like the A word, which aired recently on BBC, awareness will continue to grow. And I will continue to do my little bit as I always have, too.

My thanks to Youtube for the video, the pictures are my own.

Carol, this is an excellent blog. I'm glad that I picked this morning to read it. You are what I personally would call a go getter. I've just added you to one of my favorite inspirational people. Blessings to you today and always. When you went to Dover Town Hall how in the world did you get your books and you up a big flight of steps. That must have been interesting even if you did have a suitcase on wheels to carry your books. I absolutely love the cover of your books. I wish you continued success.

Thank you so much Nancy for your kind words. It was hard up the steps, but even harder coming down, as I wanted to hold onto the rail, and no hands were free. There is a lift, but it's out of order.

Oh bless you Stella, my lovely friend! My book can be ordered from all bookshops everywhere, but it's cheaper to buy from Amazon, as they sell below the RRP, and also the signed copies are cheaper direct from me, for anyone who is interested.

Yes Loverm I understand what you are saying. This is why I go out and meet people, strangers are more likely to buy books, but I also have a network of very loyal friends, whom I always invite to my book launch. Keep on it, don't give up!

Hello Delicia how are you? My first book is not on kindle because it was written some while ago, and the files are too old to convert without quite an expense. All the others are. But the hardback sales are going so well, maybe we can bring it out in paperback later. If you wanted a signed copy, you can buy direct from me, it's cheaper. Just let me know. xx
